It might be worth looking into adding something like this to mailman3. I do not think we want to carry changes to mailman2 at this point.
Capcha's have downsides... I'd be ok doing something like the one we have on fas tho (math with a audio option).

I am not fan of captcha. It was kinda a huge blocker on a project I worked on, and I am not sure it bring much.
What is the issue that would be solved by it ?

Person applies to fas using: john@doe.com applies to ml using: jd@gmail.com
same person, doesn't always even use the same "Real Name" John aka Jonathan aka some other version of it.
but hard to spot with the other stuff, which has to be cleared first, and hope mistake is not made.
