Puppet required?
by Avram Lubkin
I was looking over the project and it looks interesting, much improved over
Spacewalk. I particularly like how different projects are used instead of
one monolithic project. There's just one thing that concerns me. It looks
like if I want to do provisioning I have to use Foreman and if I use
Foreman I have to use Puppet. Since Puppet requires ruby installed on all
clients I can't deploy it. This is due to a security requirement. I can't
add interpreters to a system unless I have a good justification. I can do
what puppet does without adding another interpreter, so I can't justify it.
I know there are lots of organizations that use puppet and probably install
Ruby to support it, but I've never worked with a group that would allow
that. Any plans to support CFengine or something similar that wouldn't
require another interpreter on the clients? Python is Okay too, since any
RHEL or RHEL-like system already has it.
Please reply all, not on the list.
Thanks,
Avram

Katello - Multisite configuration
by Ajmal Ali
Hi, I'm trying to deploy Katello in a multi-site configuration, is there something similar to Sattalite-proxy for katello ... or would it be possible to setup a reverse proxy for ssl and http in order to reduce the bandwidth requirements on our site links?
Has anyone deployed in a multisite environment and implmented some form of caching? or is there a recommended product, or something already in the works on git?
Thanks all in advance
AJ

openoffice.org packages causing sync errors?
by Stewart, Douglas H
Howdy all,
My sync attempts on the Optional channel for RHEL6 systems keeps failing because of openoffice.org-langpack-en, specifically, it claims that the key must not contain '.'.
Anyone know what's going on here?

Advise on alternate ports
by Ng, Susan (MC Linux)
Hi,
I am trying to setup Katello on a system with other software and encountered port conflicts causing Katello to fail startup. I am wondering if you can advise on how to pick alternate ports for Katello and its related components so it can function with other software on the same system . Is there a guide or best practice on how to select alternate ports to avoid conflicts with existing software?
Thanks,
Susan

Configure Pulp packages location?
by Ron Brinker
Is it possible to configure where Pulp stores packages that it syncs from a repo? I just started playing with having Katello sync Red Hat Repositories, and they are going in /var/lib/pulp/packages, and are quite large. I'm not seeing any options in /etc/pulp/pulp.conf.
I'd like to direct Pulp to put them somewhere else, as all sorts of bad things happen as I keep running out of space in /var. (Obviously, I could mount a new fs on /var/lib/pulp/packages, but I was hoping for a cleaner solution)
Thanks,
Ron Brinker

Katello 1.1 u1 is out
by Lukas Zapletal
Hello,
today morning, we have rolled out update for Katello 1.1 release which
is solving annoying bug:
860952 - update Pool::find to not treat response as an array
I suggest to update via normal means.

Katello nightly working again
by Lukas Zapletal
Hello,
Katello nightly is working again. We apologize, but this weekend we
merged Foreman branch which is a breakthrough for Katello development.
Today, Katello nightly also configures Foreman and we are working on
more integration with Katello and Foreman which will lead to many new
features for provisioning and configuration management.

Re: Would the group consider creating a Katello Appliance?
by Michael Burbury
Dear team,
LZ is correct, a virtual appliance only for a major release, trying to do it from nightlies would be too much (my thoughts were more - nightmare - pun intended).
It should be possible to run a "yum update" to update the appliance.
If possible, the appliance could have a configure script for setting IP, hostname, DNS and basic Katello configuration, just enough to get you started.
The more simple it can be kept, the more "likes" you will probably get from those whom uptake it. The goal is to reduce complexity and package an appliance product for a single specific purpose, but still have the flexibility for advanced administrators to customize the system to their specific needs. I would say, pre-configured as a Fedora Repo and if possible a simple Ketello client script that can be run on a Fedora client system that could use HTTP to fetch packages needed for subscription to the Katello server. The easier it can be made for a user of the software, the more popular the software will become. This has been proven even by the likes of Symantec Netbackup Appliances and even Oracle's Database Appliance which have been selling extremely well.
Thank you for your consideration and good to see constructive conversations on such a delivery model, as this seems to be the most popular way things are headed in the IT Industry.
I am happy to help with the project and testing where I can.
An appliance approach to the software on Redhat, would also make it very easy for Redhat to sell in place of a Satellite server and more in line with their virtualization stack.
(The integration with RHN would be a large bonus for Redhat to control subscriptions - and license compliance which many Financial companies need to report on during audits)
Best Regards,
Michael Burbury

Would the group consider creating a Katello Appliance?
by Michael Burbury
Dear Group,
Would there be any consideration of creating a Katello Virtual Appliance?
Probably based on Fedora with a minimal setup packaged and available for download for deployment in a Redhat VM or possibly VMware VM?
Thank you for your consideration.
Best Regards,
Michael Burbury
PS> You may have faster uptake and more controlled testing if this was available as a pre-built, pre-defined virtual machine.
May also reduce the number of requests and issues. Just my 2 cents :)

Katello nightly broken
by Lukas Zapletal
Hello,
Katello nightly installation is currently broken due to Foreman
installer changes. Katello-configure fails during the db seed step.
We are working hard on it, stay tuned!
