Hi,
I liked this article for Fedora 25 - https://www.tecmint.com/things-to-do-after-fedora-24-workstation-installatio... Can we do something similar for Fedora 26?
Thanks, Amita
Hi Amita
Yes, I can write the pitch which will talks about
1) How to maintain Network Profiling 2) How to create basic required repos 3) How to install VLC with EPEL repos 4) Installing INKSCAPE / GIMP etc
We can extend the list with the help of other members.

Let's not draft anything until we have an agreed on list of precisely what is proposed to cover. I see a number of items in the referenced article which are actually bad ideas for most Fedora users.

As well as some things which may or may not be good or bad ideas, but which we can't recommend.
Sorry, I'm a little busy to redact this in a better way, but my ideas/questions about it:
1. Are we recommending people to add 3rd party repos with non-free software? e.g.: RPMFussion non-free 2. Are we overrulling default apps pre-installed? e.g.: Rhythmbox as media player. 3. Will we stick to su -c or to sudo?

My position: It's OK for us to talk about software we know people use that is not free. For instance, we reference Google Chrome because we know well over half our users download and use it. However, *recommending* it is another step and one I don't think we want to take, because that specifically disadvantages free software.
- Are we overrulling default apps pre-installed? e.g.: Rhythmbox as media
player.
See above, I don't think overruling is appropriate. But we also won't ignore the fact that people do use other things. Our purpose isn't to judge user choices. At the same time we can and should publish stories about the free software offered in Fedora.
From my perspective, the answers in #1 and #2 have governed the way the editorial board has approached pitches for articles, and will continue to do so.
- Will we stick to su -c or to sudo?
We use sudo, with an article pointer on the magazine that tells people how to use it.

I like the *idea* of an article covering various things to do after installation, but the content of this article in particular is a miss for me.
Recommending extra software to install is *one* of the things to do, but we need to come up with some more tips & tweaks that aren't `dnf install $package` to really flesh out a decent "Things to do after installing Fedora" article. Enabling the flathub remote, for example.

Just a few of my ideas as a basic users:
- a well-written (and comprehensively edited) list of *do's* and *dont's* when starting out with Fedora - there is a big issue with 3rd party/non-free stuff here (personally, I don't care so much about that but there are company-wide policy considerations to consider) - a link to useful (and cool) articles in the magazine - for example, the gpg article series - an explanation of irc and a link to Riot , including interesting freenode channels to squat in perhaps - a list a good Twitter follows in the Fedora community - for me, this would include good quality authors writing on third-party sites (possible?) - a link to the Fedora subreddit - TBH I've only just got on to Reddit but something to force me over to that community 18 months ago would have been really helpful - Something to explain the history of Fedora and how it fits into Redhat, the wider world of Linux, etc.
Anyway, that's just my two cents. I'm not a technical/industry user, so my concerns when I started out might not be the same as many others who are, say, transferring from another distro and already have the basics down.
Enjoy your weekend,
Stuart

Yea, maybe expand this to explain how to connect with the community in general. Fedora has a big presence on IRC and mailing lists, but not a big forum site.
Same goes for support. The Arch Linux wiki is a great resource for its users to get support/help. The Fedora wiki is focused more on the Fedora contributor. Instead, we recommend ask.fedoraproject.org and mailing lists?

I've been thinking about this a bit. We want Fedora to be an amazing out-of-the-box experience. The answer to "What should you do after you install Fedora?" should be "Get to work (or play)!"
Of course, there are some things we can't do (because we're restricted by patents or similar), some things we won't do (because we stick to our free software foundation), and some things we just don't wanna do (replace apps we've chosen with apps someone else happens to like). It's fine for third parties to write articles about what *they* would like to do about some of these things, but it doesn't seem right for the official magazine to do so.

Right, it seems like the content could easily cross into things that people should write on their individual blogs. As an official source, the Magazine should use caution when endorsing vs. informing.

I had a few moments to pencil out an idea for something like this. We had loosely discussed the idea a few months ago about publishing "list"-style articles. After watching on the Opensource.com moderator list for a few months, I've noticed that a lot of these types of articles perform better than other focused content (do all people have short attention spans? the world may never know…)
Anyways, I thought it would be cool to do a round-off of some of our previous articles into something similar to the linked article above. You can see it here:

I figured we could discuss the idea at the editorial meeting tonight!
