Can't Authenticate GDM Login After 'yum upgrade'
by Janina Sajka
I ran a 'yum upgrade' on my test 3 portable Thursday night. Since then
I've been unable to log onto the desktop. Console logins have not been
affected. I see the following error in /var/log/secure:
Sep 24 07:04:13 sonata gdm[6597]: pam_unix(gdm:auth): authentication
failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost=
Sep 24 07:04:13 sonata gdm[6597]: pam_succeed_if(gdm:auth): error
retrieving information about user JANINA
Well, the user is 'janina,' and not 'JANINA,' of course. Is it me? Is
there some way the desktop can be locked into caps-lock independently of
the caps lock key? Or some other issue? Down versioning gdm doesn't
help.
I'm seriously stuck on this one. I'm in Copenhagen to demonstrate the
new desktop accessibility features Monday and Tuesday. All help most
gratefully appreciated.

The FLOPPY is back
by David Bentley
I Have just noticed that the flopy disk is back under my computer but when you double click to mount it you actually get the / file system folder in the first instance and not the contents of the flopy disk. It also mounts as disk rather than floppy.
Any idea what to report this against my first guess would be gnome-mount but we also have gnome-volume-manager.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

compiz and xinerama
by Thomas J. Baker
Anyone else running a dual head setup with compiz? I've found a few
problems related to compiz apparently not being xinerama aware. Window
placement and maximize, the plane plugin, and gnome-screensaver unlock
dialog missing seem to be affected. Please add anything to this bug if
you have an xinerama setup.

No *bling* for me. Starting compiz hangs machine
by Ralph angenendt
Moin,
as I had some time yesterday, I did a fresh install of fc6 test3 on my
IBM T40 - though I kept my /home partition.
Eager to see the bling (which didn't work for me in the "XAir times"
either) I ran
gnome-window-decorator &
compiz --replace gconf
And *blam* - the machine shows a very short to none activity on disk and
then hangs completely. Anyone else seeing this/being able to reproduce
it?
As the machine is not recoverable, I have no output from dmesg ...

Shutdown errors about 'logging/handlers.py' .... ?
by Tom London
Running latest Rawhide.
During shutdown, I see 'flashing' on the console several python-type
error messages. The best I have been able to copy down is that they
complain about
/usr/lib/python2.4/logging/handlers.py:677 and :617. These lines are:
self._connect_unixsocket(self.address)
and
self.socket.connect(address)
These messages do not appear anywhere in /var/log that I can find.
Can anyone verify this? I'll try to do a better job grabbing the text
of the messages...

FC6 and laptop suspend/resume: should be a high priority bug
by Paul Johnson
The last kernel on which my Dell D820 latitude would suspend & resume
was 2.6.16. For the last two months or so---all of th 2.6.17
versions--have failed. The systems suspend, but don't resume.
There are plenty of reports like this in bugzilla.redhat.com. My
opinion is that FC6 should not be released as final until the problem
is addressed. What do you think?

Re: ata_piix and ide drivers in kernel
by William John Murray
Hi Rodd,
I think this is a case of needing "hdc=*noprobe" as an
option on your grub kernel command.
That gives me DVD access.
Unfortunately, on FC5 at the moment, it also stops nautilis automounting.
Cannot win them all!

Suspend/Resume worked and no longer works
by Rodd Clarkson
I'm going to do a little more looking into this (above and beyond what
I've done already), but after installing FC6-t3 I have experienced the
following:
Before updating (using yum update) resume worked
After updating resume no longer works.
I've retried the original kernel but this hasn't helped.
I'm using a NVIDIA card with the nv driver.

Freeze/Lockup bug in paging request kernel-smp-2.6.18-1.2189.fc5
by Paul Johnson
On a Dell Latitude D820, I've been running the updates-testing
kernel-2.6.18-1.2189.fc5, usually without trouble.
Today I launched a yum update and the download stopped in the middle
of a package, and the screen stopped being updated, and after a few
mouse clicks, the system locked up entirely. Video stayed on, frozen.
Since this has only happened once, I don't know if it is the kind of
thing to ignore or report in bugzilla. Can you advise me?
Here's what /var/log/messages says:
