Hosed ethernet connection
by Paul Michael Reilly
Ah the fun of living on the bleeding edge ...
I decided to play around with KDE today and to update my system in
general, which I do every few days or so. Imagine my surprise when all
of a sudden eth0 cannot be activated. I get:
root@localhost ~]# service network restart
Shutting down interface eth0: [ OK ]
Shutting down interface eth1: [ OK ]
Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up interface eth0:
Determining IP information for eth0...RTNETLINK answers: Network is
unreachable
done.
RTNETLINK answers: No such device
[ OK ]
Bringing up interface eth1: Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Operation not supported.
Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Device or resource busy.
Determining IP information for eth1... done.
[ OK ]
I'm pretty certain the KDE switch had nothing to do with the problem and
the yum update had everything to do with it. I noticed the thread on
glibc being an X issue but X works fine for me. Any suggestions on
which module to file this bug against?
Thanks,
-pmr

What's the command to revert back to the older version of glibc?
Thanks.

Er...! Wrong "copy-and-waste". Make it
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212745
Not that this is hard to find in bugzilla "Query".
If you have comments add these there. Curiously enough it
seems that some "random" programs are affected depending on
an installation.

Nouveau driver works in FC6 - Surprised!
by Jim Cornette
I compiled the nouveau driver as was discussed earlier and it is working
for FC6. I compiled it after upgrading to FC6 and just booted into it
and realized that it works.
Since it was discussed on this list during development and now I am
running FC6 now, development also on another installation on this same
machine, I'll refer to FC6 for follow-up postings.

Re: VMware server cannot run on FC6
by J M
I don't know how easy it is to remove #include <linux/config.h> from the
code for everything, but in order to get VMware Server working, (I found
this when struggling with the same problem), I created config.h:
create /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-i686/include/linux/config.h with
the contents:
#ifndef _LINUX_CONFIG_H
#define _LINUX_CONFIG_H
/* This file is no longer in use and kept only for backward compatibility.
* autoconf.h is now included via -imacros on the commandline
*/
#include <linux/autoconf.h>
#if !defined (__KERNEL__) && !defined(__KERNGLUE__)
#error including kernel header in userspace; use the glibc headers instead!
#endif
#endif
Probably not the best way to go about it, but it worked getting VMWare
Server going...

new problem with graphical login
by Mick M.
Hi;
after this mornings update I cannot log into X.
I am running FC6-test, with devel and extras-devel repos only.
After I login at the graphical prompt I get a warning box:
"Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds.
If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some
installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace.
Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix
the problem."
"view details (~/.xsessions-erros file)"
"localuser mick being added to access control list

Then back to login screen.
thanks
Mick

/usr in rc1
by Kwan Lowe
In FC5 system-config-lvm had the ability to resize ext3 filesystems on the fly. This
no longer seems to be the case in FC6, at least on my system. Not a big deal on my
workstation, but on a server with no downtime windows this may be an issue.
Anyhoo, that's not the main issue. I rebooted into single user mode to resize the
fs. Trying to unmount /usr complains that the device is busy, even though fuser
doesn't show anything hanging onto it. I was able to resize the LV and resize2fs
noted that the fs was mounted but continued.
"fuser -m /usr" shows the PID of /bin/sh, but nothing pointing to /usr. The question
is,
in single user mode, why is sh holding on to /usr?
