On the third try, I installed 386 F7 on my 256MB laptop.
The two graphical install attempts failed when the installation
of files stalled after about half the files were installed. A
subsequent text install worked.
X windows would not accept a 1024x768 resolution even when the colors
were set lower. Both Ubuntu 5.10 and Back|Track 2 are able to run
at the full 1024x768 resolution.

This issue never came up before this time.
You are right. I forgot to report this issue. Since FC6, and on rawhide, I have both Kile and TeXMaker enabled. Kile defaults to using kdvi and TeXMaker to evince.

The dvi backend is currently not enabled in Fedora's
Evince builds
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=173514).
In the meantime, I'll revert the patch that reset the
default dvi viewer to evince. Thanks.

Great/ Thanks for sharing this information. I guess not too many people use TeXMaker. It was never a bug just a missing feature.

BTW,
Does this update fix the opening with evince issue?
If you try to view a dvi file by clicking on dvi viewer from texmaker, you get evince popping up and then telling you that it cannot open the file up.
the command is
evince %dvi
and to workaround it I yum installed tetex-xdvi* and changed the dvi viewer command to
xdvi %.dvi -bg white
