FC8 T2 testing fails on avahi, digikam, hibernate on Dell Inspiron 6400

I'm trying F8 T2 (KDE Live - 386)on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and have observed the following 3 items so far: 1/ At boot time, the avahi daemon fails to start. /var/log/messages shows: Sep 14 15:26:47 localhost avahi-daemon[3229]: Found user 'avahi' (UID 499) and group 'avahi' (GID 497). I just wanna say thanks for you guys hard work This is really starting to work with Windoze functionality without the security issues and the horrible coding which requires literally hundreds of hotfixes http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?s=e697ef6d106102eed4f3527fb3689c5… I had a previous question about the kernel build, but I solved that by modifying the spec file to point to my kernel config. I have built and am using the 2.6.23-0.170 kernel. The main problem is that the kernel source tree used an i386 subdirectory to group architectural specific files. Building a kernel with those files (and booting it) produces essentially an i386 kernel. At that point kmods can't be built because i386 it not an option Probably yall know this already... Batten down the hatches, Fedora 8 Test 2 spotted just over the port side bow! A veritable "sea" of choices await you in this release. First up is the "Fedora" installable 'choose your own adventure' style set of isos and trees for i386, x86_64, and ppc(64). Next up we have a variety of Live images: * Fedora Live (i686, x86_64, ppc) - A good general use Desktop live image. i686 even fits on a CD! * Fedora KDE Live (i686, x86_64) - A Desktop based on the KDE software suite. i686 even fits on a CD! * Fedora Developer Live (i686) - A Live image designed for software developers. * Fedora Electronic Lab (FEL) Live (i686) - A live image designed for engineers working on electronics. f8t2 live x86_64 Seems OK, except avahi daemon failed. Log says segfault. This doesn't happen on my install f7 (with all updates).

I'm trying to install f8t2 under xen on my f7 box using the same procedure that worked for f8t1, but this time it fails. I have tried two installs from the i386 DVD after checking sha1sum and checking the media to PASS. Both ended in an exception that stopped the install. Any others seeing this? Any further info I can provide? Gerry

Kernel .178. works well

I installed "kernel-2.6.23-0.178.rc6.git2.fc8" without problems on two of my troublesome DELL boxes. Thanks for your hard work in getting that kernel working. Here are the details: DELL Dimension 1100 Desktop (Service Tag: 4VRDX91) - pcHDTV HD5500 HDTV works - audio works in the past few kernels both did not always work at the same time DELL Inspiron 8600 Laptop (1600x1050 LCD, Service Tag: DC0Y441) - boots okay (F8T1 hung in VESA boot code) - networking works. both wired and wireless On irritating nit with this laptop is that the touchpad has tap-to-click mode enabled by default so I find that the touchpad is dangerous to use for sysadmin work. Not sure if that is a Linux, X.org or other problem. Pat ---

I'm still seeing the problem that gedit refuses to save files without complaining that it cannot write a backup. I've identified the code that causese the trouble and it's the bits after the comment "copy the xattrs, like user.mime_type, over. Also ACLs and SELinux context". If I comment the respective code out the problem no longer appears but then I also lose the xattrs on the files. The question why exactly has gedit problems here?
