How hard is this to check?
If gpk-update-icon starts checking for updates, which you can tell either my watching it with pkmon, or just by observing the "updates available" star that appears.
The fly in the ointment there is if there *are* no updates, which is rare but can happen at the end of the release process (say when we're testing the final RC). There are ways around this, though - as you say, you can use pkmon to watch it, or just set up a dummy repository with some fake 'updates' in it.
