No sound on youtube

[Tom Diehl]

Hi,

I have a 64 bit rawhide/F10 system that I am trying to get youtube audio and
video working on. I followed the instructions at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/Desktop#Enabling_Flash_Plugin and
http://macromedia.mplug.org/ but so far I can get the video but no audio.
The soundcard is working with rythmbox. I do not get any errors when I access
youtube, just no audio.

about plugins says the following with respect to flash:

File name: nswrapper_32_64.libflashplayer.so

I think the failures wrt the links above is due to the fact that they already
exist. I did verify that they do in fact already exist.

Does anyone have youtube audio working on rawhide/F10?

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to get this working?

Yes.

I have flash-plugin-10.0.12.36-release.i386 (from the Adobe repo),
nspluginwrapper-1.1.2-4.fc10.i386 and
nspluginwrapper-1.1.2-4.fc10.x86_64, same as you. I do not have libtotem
installed. I used to but removed it, which seemed to improve several
things such as Quicktime but IIRC didn't affect Flash particularly.

I do not understand the reference to libtotem. There does not seem to
be a package available called libtotem. Am I missing something?

I should have said totem. Your plugin list contains references to
libtotem, which is what confused me momentarily. It's probably not
relevant.

Another one that seems to have worked for some people.

I remember it was relatively easy for me, but I don't remember how I did
it.   I think it worked out of the box, more or less, after installing
nspluginwrapper and libflashsupport with flash 9, and then I just
upgraded with rpm -Uvh to flash 10, but I'm not positive that's all I
did.

I looked at that page and the procedure seems essentially the same as
what I did. One thing most pages say is that I need to install libflashsupport
but libflashsupport is not available for F10 and I noted in several places that
with flash10 it is not necessary.

Another thing I noticed was that I need pulseaudio "enabled". I have the
pulseaudio installed but I do not know if it is "enabled". Is there something
special I need to do to enable it or is installing the package sufficient?
This machine was a fresh install from rawhide about 4 weeks ago. I doubt that
it matters but...

I installed flash10 on my F9 laptop (i386) a week or so ago and it
"just worked". I was hoping for the same with F10. I even removed the
libflashsupport package as suggested and it still works.

As far as I can see you are absolutely right. It was available until 
recently, and I couldn't imagine would be changed so late in the process.

So yes, apparently the documentation is wrong and it should work without 
libflashsupport.

Well, I downloaded the libflashsupport package from Koji and installed it and
now my sound is working.

Below is what was in the latest changelog but it is from April.

- undo deps from x86_64 to i386 because it upset Jesse
   For now this means x86-64 users need to manually install libflashsupport.i386
   and nspluginwrapper.i386 in order to use Flash.
   We need to discuss what to do for Fedora 9 release during FESCO.

Odd.  I just tried removing, on a 32 bit system this time, firefox,
nspluginwrapper and flash.

I reinstalled flash from the Adobe site.  
I installed firefox.  I didn't have to do anything.  (When I removed 
firefox the first time, I also deleted ~/.mozilla.)

I opened firefox and it showed the flash plugin and worked.  No
libflashsupport was installed.  

A few things that I do a little differently, which might be an issue,
though I don't see why.  I don't use gnome and sound doesn't work for me
with a default install.  I still have to edit permissions in
/etc/security/console.perms.d/50-default-perms.  I also remove
alsa-pulseaudio-plugin (or whatever it's called.)  I leave all the other
pulseaudio stuff in place, that's the package that seems to break it for
me.  

In fairness to pulse audio, and to the decision to tie sound to console
kit, once I found that these two actions fixed it for me, I stopped
looking for other solutions.  On Ubuntu it all works as it's supposed
to, and I don't find sound any better in quality, so whatever
that alsa pulseaudio plugin might provide, it doesn't make it worth even
5 minutes of googling to figure out how to get it to work, for me.

This is on a 32 bit system just upgraded today. 


So, maybe one should simply get the plugin from Adobe?  (Though I
suspect it's the same rpm.)

Yes, it doesn't work. Flash is proprietary technology, and even though 
Fedora implements a lot of workarounds it is a PITA to make it work 
correctly. The attempts to make open source implementation hasn't been 
finished yet.

No, I'm not that optimistic.  I'm sort of losing track here--I was
referring to Tom's post about how he needed libflashplugin.

Nope, it must be someone else. I did not even think about looking there.

For the record, I got the flash plugin from adobe's repo and I needed
libflashsupport from Koji to make it work.

At the bottom I add

If I don't do this, then in fluxbox or console, if I try to play a song

Well... Weird. I suggest filing an (or several) issues for 
libflashsupport. And please post a reference to it on 471793.

And, everybody, please be exact with
rpm -q kernel nspluginwrapper flash-plugin libflashsupport

And please keep i386 and x86_64 issues totally separate and on different 
issues.

No sound on youtube (Solved)

Well for me it turns out that Ignacio was right. I did not have 
alsa-{lib,plugins-pulseaudio}.i386 installed. To confirm this was the problem,
I unininstalled libflashsupport restarted firefox and confirmed that the audio
was once again inop. I then did yum install alsa-{lib,plugins-pulseaudio}.i386
and restarted firefox. Audio was once again working.

So as far as I can tell, we do NOT need libflashsupport even on x86_64.

Ignacio, I am curious, how did you figure this out?

I tried that initially but it did not seem to make a difference. When I 
installed alsa-{lib,plugins-pulseaudio}.i386 I did NOT run it and things
are working.

And of course alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i386 so that it actually gets
routed to PA.

Hm, on my F9 x86_64 installation I have only x86_64 pulse related
packages, flash-plugin-10.0.12.36.i386, no libflashsupport and
an audio from youtube is present.  All that while streaming in the
same time ogg from other Internet sources and both sounds are
playing.  Just checked.

Both alsa-lib.x86_64 and alsa-lib.i386 are indeed present.
