Hi,
I recently installed F14. I've noticed that even when I tell grub to use 1024x768 in the consoles (vga=0x317), it starts out there, then quickly flips to the default for the gui, 1280x1024. I like 1280x1024 for the gui, but it is just slightly uncomfortable in the console.
When I compile a custom kernel and explicitly enable framebuffer support for vesa modes, the consoles come out perfectly, but the gui has a maximum resolution of 1024x768.
Is there a way to have the gui at 1280x1024 and the console at 1024x768?
And if there isn't, what would I open the bugzilla against to request this capability? Or is it not feasible?
My system uses the nouveau driver with old hardware (no fancy stuff).
Thanks.

This is a result of all the new "kernel mode setting" changes in the video drivers. If what you are really after is a bigger font in the console, you could try the one I attached to this bugzilla:

You hit the nail on the head with the bugzilla. More real estate, same bit size fonts.
I was just about to replay to my original query with the information that I found a program called setfont, and all the fonts in /lib/kbd/consolefonts/. In particular, I adjusted the font to be one of the wonderful terminus fonts[1], and I am happy now. Having the ability to use 16 bit color in the console would make me even happier, but that seems to be unachievable without moving mountains.
Experiment on a terminal by typing, say, setfont ter-120b -C /dev/tty2 to try the font out on terminal2.
1. packages terminus-fonts-console and terminus-fonts (for X11).
