seems this behavior is triggered when some files are not found.
i ported some reps. from apt (synaptic) to up2date and there was a "/" too much
in the url.
example:
the line in apt sources.list
rpm
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/fedora/ redhat/0.94/i386 os updates stable testing
unstable
has to be changed to this in up2date sources
apt fedora-core-extras
http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/fedora redhat/0.94/i386 os updates
stable testing unstable
