This is due to a problem with X and support for my (fairly standard) video
hardware (Intel D845GERG2 on-board controller,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/
show_bug.cgi?id=470371).
Intel 845 sounds very oldish chipset. Must be upgraded to support latest
distributions.
Not really; and besides this is rather hard to do if this is a
laptop with an integrated video which is very often the case with
these chipsets. In any case this is a piece of Xorg.0.log from a
laptop with F10 installed on it (it required also in a boot command
'clocksource=jiffies' before that started to work):
.....
(==) intel(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(**) intel(0): Option "NoAccel"
(II) intel(0): Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) 845G
(--) intel(0): Chipset: "845G"
.....
The driver in question claims the following support:
(II) intel: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810,
i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G, 915G,
E7221 (i915), 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 945GME, 965G, G35, 965Q, 946GZ,
965GM, 965GME/GLE, G33, Q35, Q33,
Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset,
Intel Integrated Graphics Device, G45/G43, Q45/Q43, G41
so if it does not then this is a bug. Unfortunately it is not hard
to find those for that driver in bugzilla.
My question is, what now?
Now it is a time to read 'man intel'. It definitely would be nicer
if that would work straight "out-of-the-box" but if it does not ....
