Hmm. In that case I usually just use "killall -15 [daemonname]" or
"killall -9 [daemonname]" (last resort only of course) and then either
set the script to not run at boot time or fix it manually.

I have found that a slight variation works better in case of a bug in
the /etc/rc.d/init.d/xxx script
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xxx off
/usr/sbin/chkconfig --level 12345 xxx off
