Cloud infrastructure package group
by Bill Nottingham
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731712
The HekaFS maintainers were looking for a appropriate group for their
package. I was thinking that perhaps having a 'cloud infrastructure'
or 'cloud support' group might be the best place, but we don't have
one of those, and I'm not sure what all packages should be in it.
Would someone fom the Cloud SIG like to take a stab at it?
Thanks,
Bill

Aeolus on F15 screencast (thanks, Mo!) and MY CHALLENGE TO YOU
by Robyn Bergeron
Just thought I'd draw some love and attention to the recent screencast
mmorsi put together showing Aeolus on F15:
Blog post here - http://mo.morsi.org/blog/node/343
Screencast here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Yb7I4M6mo
Handily, he's also made a nice how-to-screencast blog post:
http://mo.morsi.org/blog/node/345
This, as you might have guessed by now, leads to... MY CHALLENGE TO YOU,
Cloud SIG friends:
F16 is due out in mere months - which means press is going to start
focusing in on what's new in Fedora. If F15 press was any indication
(ooh! Shiny Cloud Things!), I expect we'll be drawing more attention
with the additional cloud pieces we now have. I think that running a
mini-series of blogposts featuring screencasts of some of our Cloudy
Features would be excellent.
If we can get at least three more screencasts on any of the following
topics:
* pacemaker-cloud
* sheepdog
* condor-cloud
* HekaFS
* Additional cloudy things in Fedora that aren't features or are past
features (BoxGrinder, OpenStack, Fedora on EC2)
... I will make MY OWN SCREENCAST of myself attempting to do Something
Technical and Cloud-Related, probably along the lines of "Will it
Blend?" but titled, "Can She Cloud?" ... or something like that. In
fact, I might just leave it to everyone else's discretion what it is
that I have to do. (Bounded by the line of, IT HAS TO BE CLOUD RELATED,
of course.) Which could be fun. Or utterly embarrassing. But hopefully
educational in some way. But first, there must be Other Screencasts.
Do I hear any volunteers willing to make a screencast yet? :)

Fedora EC2 image build instructions
by Justin Forbes
A walkthrough has been posted with instructions for building your own
Fedora based EC2 images (both S3 and EBS backed) on the Fedora Wiki:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Cloud_SIG/EC2_Creation
As a part of this, appliance definition files have been added to the
cloud-kickstarts git repository fedorahosted.org:
http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=cloud-kickstarts.git
While the current plan is to move official Fedora image generation to
koji, we know that most users are not able to build images in koji. We
wanted to ensure that there was a process by which the community could
build EC2 images to meet their needs. As such, we will continue to
maintain the Fedora appliance definition files with each release. The
goal is to keep the appliance file as close to the official images as
possible (read stripped down), so that you can add what you need and not
worry about pulling in a lot of things you don't need. You can expect
the appliance definition files for each release to appear at roughly the
time of the alpha spin.
We welcome feedback, comments, patches, etc. on both the documentation,
and the supported appliance definitions.
Thanks,
Justin

OpenStack packaging progress
by Angus Salkeld
Hi Mark
> What you can do to help:
> Volunteer to co-maintain the packages
I can help with one or two of these.
> Try out the "getting started" instructions and point out any problems
I ran through this and the only question I have is about setting up the
network.
I changed:
sudo nova-manage network create markmc 10.0.0.0/24 1 256 --bridge=br0
to
sudo nova-manage network create asalkeld 192.168.200.0/24 1 256 --bridge=br0
(as my eth0 is on a 10.0.0. network)
When I ran the instance it did show up in virt-manager but seemed stuck
in the bootup:
"gPXE bla bla ..."
"Booting from ROM..."
and it gets stuck there.
Is this trying to boot from an image off of the internet?
I suspect my network is the issue, but not sure what.
iptables & selinux is off and I can ping the VM.
Any ideas?
> Help out with the TODO list
I'll have a look at the init scripts and try convert them to systemd
service files.
Thanks

[RFC] CUDCon - Cloud conference to parallel FUDCon
by Karsten Wade
Cloud SIG folks:
We love the Fedora FUDCon model. Just as JBoss did with JUDCon, I'd
like to start a new users and developers-focused conference around
cloud efforts that relate to Fedora and, by effect, Red Hat's cloud
and virtualization efforts.
Not-so-tentatively called CUDCon, "Ruminate with us about clouds!",
the Cloud Users and Developers Conference (beginning) idea is:
* Go alongside an existing FUDCon.
** Existing base of users and developers who are naturally interested
in the technical focus of CUDCon.
** Attract wider range and more sponsorship.
** Cross-seed people and talks so cloud-related talks at FUDCon are
also part of CUDCon.
** Grow attendance at FUDCon by bringing in cloud-focused people who
might not otherwise attend.
* Bring in open community cloud efforts of all backgrounds that are
built on an open source stack that include Fedora or its
remixes/downstreams such as RHEL, CentOS, etc.
** Nice-sized ecosystem without saying, "Everyone and everything."
** Sponsors should (MUST?) come from that milieu - be contributors to
open community cloud efforts that fit within the Fedora/RHEL
ecosystem.
* Participation point for upstream components that could play in/run
on Fedora-family technology.
I'd like to run the first mini-CUDCon as a cloud track for FUDCon
Milan, then the first full-CUDCon at FUDCon Blacksburg 2012. (I'll be
contacting those organizers separately from here.) I'm interested in
your reaction to this idea before I get too much farther. :)
There are a few reasons for doing a stand-alone conference brand from
FUDCon and Fedora. One of these is that it's harder to argue that some
cloud efforts fit within FUDCon. For example, Red Hat's OpenShift is
built from Fedora-sourced components, on an open source architecture
that includes Fedora technologies, but it is not yet entirely open
source, so it doesn't have (m)any components in the Fedora package
repo. Some open cloud communities may want to play in the Fedora space
even if there isn't going to be a pure set of packages to install.
CUDCon is a place to have these crossover discussions, as a catalyst
and sowing-of-grass for future efforts.
Audience:
* People who may think, "Our open source cloud software is not in
Fedora, so FUDCon isn't for us."
** They benefit from exposure to FUDCon.
** Way to include increased cloud interest without diluting or
distracting the FUDCon focus.
** Cross-seeding with FUDCon possible but no mandatory, more relaxed
exchange of ideas.
* Fedora-family of developers, administrators, and users (including
RHEL/CentOS/Scientific Linux).
* Open source cloud enthusiasts.
** Folks who are interested in learning or teaching about open source
cloud.
* Individuals or organizations developing and deploying in the cloud.
* Software companies with one or more open source cloud components in
their stack.
As I add more information to this proposal, you can keep track by
putting a watch on this page:

ANNOUNCE: oz0.6.0 release
by Chris Lalancette
All,
I'm pleased to announce release 0.6.0 of Oz. Oz is a program for doing
automated installation of guest operating systems with limited input from
the user.
Release 0.6.0 is a bugfix and feature release for Oz. Some of the
highlights between Oz 0.5.0 and 0.6.0 are:
- The ability to specify the destination for the ICICLE output from oz-install
and oz-generate-icicle
- pydoc class documentation for all internal Oz classes
- Automatic detection of KVM or QEMU at runtime (this allows oz to be used
within virtual machines, although with a large performance hit)
- Less scary warning messages in the debug output
- Printing of the screenshot path when a build fails
- Ability to run multiple Oz installs of the same OS at the same time
- Support for OEL and ScientificLinux
- Support for RHEL-5.7
- Support for CentOS 6
- Support for OpenSUSE arbitrary file injection and command execution
- Ability to make the TDL (template) parsing enforce a root password
- Rejection of localhost URLs for repositories (since they must be reachable
from the guest operating system, localhost URLs make no sense)
Fedora-14, Fedora-15, and RHEL-6 packages are available for this release. Note
that to install the RHEL-6 packages, you must be running RHEL-6.1 or later.
Instructions on how to get and use Oz are available at
http://aeolusproject.org/oz.html
If you have any questions or comments about Oz, please feel free to contact
aeolus-devel(a)lists.fedorahosted.org or me (clalance(a)redhat.com) directly.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this release through bug reports,
patches, and suggestions for improvement.

Cloud SIG Meeting Minutes - 2011-08-19
by Robyn Bergeron
Hi folks,
LOTS O FUN today - many things going on. Logs and minutes links are
here, full minutes are below. I'll also note that I skipped over the
BoxGrinder folks haphazardly, despite being reminded, so we chatted
really quick after the meeting, and I just copypasta'd the convo to
below the meeting minutes, for everyone's benefit.
There's also some discussion today, and reading the logs might be
helpful for more context (discussion towards end of meeting) about the
idea of having a CUDCon (Cloud Users/Developers Conference), possibly at
the same time as a FUDCon, and quaid is following up with a mail to the
Cloud SIG about that idea.

much more reliable and deals with edge cases better
13:09 < msavy> also, of interest to some, is that BG now works nicely on
EC2 Micro instances
13:09 < msavy> so if you're skint, you're in luck :D!
13:10 < rbergeron> if you're skint?
13:10 < msavy> == 'are short of money' :)
13:10 < rbergeron> oh :)
13:11 < msavy> various other improvements and bug-fixes, just check the
blogpost, dont want to extend rbergeron's torture any further.
3:11 < msavy> there were problems with S3 backed AMIs previously btw
13:11 < msavy> but this is now in the past, it was a kernel bug
13:11 < msavy> all fixed!
