At present we provide two @fedoraproject.org addresses to everyone who has a fedoraproject account.
account@fp.o and first.last@fp.o
Notting pointed out that its only a matter of time before we have a collision in first.last. Should we just get rid of it? I don't know of anyone using it.

I saw it being used in atleast one guy's profile. Maybe a send a mail to everyone with the account that we are dropping off the first.last@fp.o alias would be more prudent just in case someone is using it actively. Moreover it would be useful if users in the account name can set aliases manually. When you sign up for a account, the fact that you get a email id automatically should be better documented in the account pages too.

Unless anyone can think of any reason not to, I'll send a list to announce, devel and extras stating that we'll be getting rid of first.last.

I didnt even knew that we could get those email addresses...

We don't advertise it really. I'm not sure why, I guess we kind of just hope that people don't use it until they've been involved long enough to learn about it :-D Makes them look more official.
-Mike
That makes alot of sense

Maybe just stop for new accounts, and grandfather in what's there? (I don't know if the setup for generating them really allows for this...)
Bill
let me create mine then :D

Actually they're auto generated when you create your account at the top of every hour.

Actually I'd rather just drop it for everyone, mostly because we have a lot of first / last combos that are invalid syntactically that will cause us issue when upgrading to postfix.

Another possible solution - add a 'UNIQUE' constraint onto the human_name field in the db...

while account@fp.o is technically easier, first.last@fp.o looks better and is more professional. If we can keep it, I'd rather do! A check for ASCII characters only + uniqueness might be all that's needed in the web app as suggested

professional doesn't matter, imo. Fedora is a hobbiest and enthusiast-driven linux distro.
no professional needs :)

I'd like to think "mmcgrath" is a professional sounding account :-D But I'd hate to tell the next Mike McGrath that they can't create an account because their first and last name is already taken. Plus saying "no first name last name" accounts is easier than telling those that have special characters in their names that they can't have the first name last name account.
