I installed FC4t3 on a G5 a week or so ago.
I've since removed it (and can't easily check), but my impression was
that the system did not use a TLS-based libc and (I therefore assume)
included an older LinuxThreads library instead of NPTL. (The unofficial
FC3 releases for PPC -did- install and use a TLS-based C library and
NPTL.)
If my impression and assumption are correct, does anyone know if this
omission was intentional and, if so, what the rationale is ?

You are mistaken. You might have been expecting that NPTL would be
installed in /lib/tls and that libraries not in /lib/tls are not
TLS-supporting, NPTL-using libraries. That is not the case. In FC4, the
TLS-using libc and the NPTL libpthread are the only ones really supported,
and those are what you see in /lib. /lib/obsolete/linuxthreads has what it
sounds like, and you have to try hard to get it if you really want it.
