Problems with IDE controller (sporadic) with the Fedora Kernel
by Kyon
Folks,
I have installed the fedora system on my girls computer, and have found that
when I boot into the kernel from that system, I will get a system crash with
the ide controller unable to write/read from the disk. This will happen not
immediately, but after a few hours of operation. The one thing that may have
occured is that the screen saver may have come on, I will find this after I
come back to the system after it's been idle for a while (maybe there's a
power saving ide suspend command that gets called when the system is idle)
The system will NOT do this with the standard 9 kernel (and has been up and
'stable' for quite a while ~1.5yrs). The offending kernel is
2.4.21-20.1.2024.2.1.nptl
and the reliable kernel is 2.4.20 (from a tar file, the Fedora core has
helpfully removed all my previous kernels, I so notice now that I check). I
did the config on this kernel tree on Feb 28, 2003, but I can't place it any
more clearly in the kernel pantheon.
The system is an ASUS A7S333 motherboard, and the portion of dmesg relevant to
the ide is
hda: WDC WD800JB-00DUA0, ATA DISK drive
blk: queue c0400040, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
hdc: TDK CDRW241040X, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: attached ide-disk driver.
hda: host protected area => 1
hda: 156301488 sectors (80026 MB) w/8192KiB Cache, CHS=9729/255/63, UDMA(100)
(i.e. a Western digital 80GB drive , in UDMA(100) mode. )
I also have the cdrom using ide-scsi, if that has any relevance.
Am I alone in this problem, or are there other folks with this strange ide
problem?

FC1 AMD64 Preview installer crash
by Joshua Baker-LePain
I'm trying to install the AMD64 preview of FC1 on a dual Opteron system
(dual 240s, HDAMA motherboard, 8GB RAM). Anaconda crashes (with a
kernel BUG) just as it's starting the text mode installer. If I boot with
mem=2048M, the installer works just fine, although I still end up with a
broken system[1]. I've got a serial console log from the failed install
(trimmed down to mostly the essentials) here:
http://www.duke.edu/~jlb17/installer.crash.8GB.txt
If I can do anything or provide any more details, let me know.
[1] It OOPSes on boot. If I edit the boot line in grub to add a serial
console, it seems to actually boot (??), but has the library issues I
see others having in the archives.

If you're doing development and know what you're doing, great. Start
cupsd with the PATH you want and you're set.

Summary : Software for accessing digital cameras
Description :
The gPhoto2 project is a universal, free application and library
framework that lets you download images from several different
digital camera models, including the newer models with USB
connections. Note that
a) for some older camera models you must use the old "gphoto" package.
b) for USB mass storage models you must use the driver in the kernel
This package contains
i) the library that digital camera applications can use
ii) the command-line utility gphoto2
Other (GUI) frontends are available separately.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
New packages are available for gPhoto2, in order to fix bug #111415.

[SECURITY] Fedora Core 1 Test Update: rsync-2.5.7-2
by Bill Nottingham
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Fedora Test Security Update Notification
FEDORA-2003-030
2003-12-04
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Name : rsync
Version : 2.5.7
Release : 2
Summary : A program for synchronizing files over a network.
Description :
Rsync uses a reliable algorithm to bring remote and host files into
sync very quickly. Rsync is fast because it just sends the differences
in the files over the network instead of sending the complete
files. Rsync is often used as a very powerful mirroring process or
just as a more capable replacement for the rcp command. A technical
report which describes the rsync algorithm is included in this
package.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
New rsync packages are available that fix a heap overflow in the rsync
server; this vulnerability could be used to execute arbitrary code as
an unprivileged user. It is recommended that all users using the server
functionality of rsync upgrade to the fixed packages.

CUPS - GS - question/problem
by clemens@dwf.com
Cups uses Ghostscript to print to non-Postscript printers.
And it needs its own version of gs, with its print driver installed in it.
OK.
I just had problems printing to one printer that I KNOW I had been
able to print to before, and ran it down to there being two copies
of gs on my system,- one in /usr/bin/gs the other in /usr/local/bin/gs
and CUPS using the wrong one.
Ive LOOKED but havent found any way to configure CUPS to use a specific
version (path) to gs. My hope was that this would be in cups.conf, but
no luck.
So the question.
Is it possible to configure CUPS to use a specific version of gs???
and yes, there are reasons for my having two versions on the system.

AMD64 Preview Release Updates
by Justin M. Forbes
For those of you running the AMD64 preview release, please download and
install the updated yum located at:
http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/fc1_x86_64/updates
I will be posting updates there as they are available (with announcements
here of course). Currently there are 2 updates.
- kernel: is just an AMD64 build of the FC1 errata kernel, please see the
changelog posted by Dave for changes here. One extra note, the preview
release kernel has libata merged, the updated FC1 kernel does not, so do
not update if you are currently dependant on it.
- yum: Yum is taken from the latest yum daily snapshot RPM. The only
modification here is the yum.conf. You will need to replace your
yum.conf with the one included in this package or add its entries. The
largest change here of note is that this yum actually works with AMD64.
I will post more as they are available.
