F8 on a Mac Pro hangs during boot
by Gabriel Somlo
I have installed (with no problems whatsoever) F8 test on a Mac Pro
tower. Trouble is, once I try to reboot into F8 after the install is
done, the machine hangs in rc.sysinit right after calling /sbin/start_udev
I've booted it using the rescue image, ran yum to bring it up to date,
and now it gets as far as 'setting hostname', still in rc.sysinit.
I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, and what do do about
narrowing down the root cause...
Thanks,
Gabriel

How to for upgrading from F7 to F8 via yum?
by Kevin DeKorte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Just wondering if someone was going to write a howto on how to
correctly upgrade F7 to F8 via yum so that features like PulseAudio are
installed correctly?
When going from FC6 to F7 after the yum upgrade I remember having to do
something like 'yum groupupdate "GNOME Desktop Environment"' to get a
few things installed.
I would prefer to use yum to upgrade my machine, but I have the feeling
that if I do that some things won't be quite right.
Thanks,
Kevin

pcscd CPU usage
by David L
I've noticed several times that pcscd sucks a lot of CPU.
My uptime is 866 minutes and top is reporting that pcscd has
used 843 minutes of CPU and is currently using 99%:
1856 root 20 0 44628 1608 764 S 99 0.2 843:20.24 pcscd
Is there anything I can try to provide some useful debugging
info?

F8T3 KDE Sound - Sound server fatal error
by Gerry Tool
This morning after rebooting following a kernel and kmod-nvidia
upgrade, the sound system is cycling through trying to start and
presenting a message window that says
"Sound Server fatal erorr - cpu overload, aborting."
Disabling the sound system in KDE Control Panel > Sound & Multimedia >
Sound System stops the message, but of course sound would be nice.
Any others seeing this, or any hints on how to fix it?
Thanks.

ALSA 1.0.15 update test kernels available
by Chuck Ebbert
We are considering adding ALSA 1.0.15 to the Fedora 8 release. This
would get us up-to-date with the latest audio drivers and fix many
problems with audio drivers not working, or only partially working.
Test kernels for i686 and x86_64 are available at:
http://people.redhat.com/cebbert/kernels/F8/
Also, kernel 2.6.23.1-36 has the update and is now building.
It would be very helpful if people would test these kernels and reply
to this message with their experiences, so we can see if this update
causes any problems.

how to test compiz-manager
by Gianluca Cecchi
Usually I used beryl-manager in F7.
I have been using compiz in rawhide from the beginning
Now I downloaded the recently added compiz-manager for upcoming f8.
Should it replace ccsm? Or is it intended to be only a launcher to be
placed in session startup?
When I run it from a terminal I get
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:0142 (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1280x1024) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Starting gtk-window-decorator
and all is ok with the effects.
Also cube movement while clicking different desktop...
While using GL Desktop function this is not enabled?????
Finally compiz/compiz-fusion seem to have here the same fluidity that beryl
already had many nonths ago... EVVIVA!
I supposed to get similar thing as the beryl to manage all the effects,
though, while I see nothing....
Is yet only gconf customizable on f8 or do I miss anything?
Packages I have right now are:
rpm -qa|grep compiz
kicker-compiz-3.5.4-4.fc8
libcompizconfig-0.6.0-3.fc8
compiz-fusion-extras-0.6.0-1.fc8
compiz-fusion-extras-gnome-0.6.0-1.fc8
compiz-fusion-gnome-0.6.0-5.fc8
compiz-manager-0.6.0-3.fc8
compizconfig-python-0.6.0-1.fc8
gnome-compiz-manager-0.10.4-2.fc8
compiz-gnome-0.6.2-2.fc8
compiz-fusion-0.6.0-5.fc8
with compiz-manager active, running GL Desktop I get
/usr/bin/compiz-manager: line 406: 3158 Terminated
${COMPIZ_BIN_PATH}gtk-window-decorator --replace
so the two seem incompatible.....
how one should run and mix them?
Bye,
Gianluca

Quadratic Torrent
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Everyone must be using Comcast - the RC3 x86_64 is proceeding
at a snail's pace. Since the last rawhide wouln't run on my Intel
motherboard, I thought the developers might wish to know if
RC3 works before it is to late to fix anything for release.

F8T3 and chess
by John Summerfield
Since the chess program lacks a library of games, and recalling my chess
hero of a while ago, I googled for some of Bobby's games.
I found this: http://www.chesscorner.com/games/download/fischer.zip, a
collection of 879 games (or so the website says).
I was a little surprised to find all the games in a single file, but I
really don't know anything about the pgn format except it's somewhat
intelligible to mortals:
[summer@potoroo ~]$ head -20 Download/fischer.pgn
[Event "?"]
[Site "New York,1848"]
[Date "????.??.??"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Fischer"]
[Black "Unknown"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "B57"]
[Opening "Sicilian, Magnus Smith Trap"]
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 d6 6. Bc4 g6
7. Nxc6 bxc6 8. e5 dxe5 9. Bxf7+ 1-0
[Event "?"]
Unfortunately, "chess" can't open the file, it complains "unknown
character '..' where the two dots represent two characters I can't type
on this keyboard.
Those question marks really are question marks, they're not being used
to represent anything unprintable.
The question is, is this file invalid? Chess doesn't give me anything
useful (for example, the line number or the byte offset).
I then downloaded this http://www.pgnmentor.com/players/Tal.zip and some
other files from the same location, but chess can't open those either.
Has anyone had better fortune?

Cheers
John
