Product : Fedora Core 6
Name : ntp
Version : 4.2.4p0
Release : 2.fc6
Summary : Synchronizes system time using the Network Time Protocol (NTP).
Description :
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize a computer's
time with another reference time source. The ntp package contains
utilities and daemons that will synchronize your computer's time to
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) via the NTP protocol and NTP servers.
The ntp package includes ntpdate (a program for retrieving the date
and time from remote machines via a network) and ntpd (a daemon which
continuously adjusts system time).
Install the ntp package if you need tools for keeping your system's
time synchronized via the NTP protocol.

Login from a text console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and use:
killall -v esd

If this is the bug I think it is¹, this might fix it for now:
gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/sound/enable_esd -t bool false

Maybe that was it Sertaç. I got into GNOME the last part of the day, and apparently things were back to normal. I was desperately trying to get the sound working and I might have accidently enabled the esd sound on GNOME. I am learning also KDE uses arts. I hope that GNOME works again, I got it back and I hope all is well. I did the following
$ rm -rf .gconf/
$ rm -rf .gconfd/
$ rm -rf .gnome/
$ rm -rf .gnome2/
$ rm -rf .gnome2_private/
$ rm -rf qt* ????/
I tried just for the sake of it as I was leaving work to log back in and it worked. I got the panels, the clock, etc. Hopefully tomorrow all is well again. Thanks for replying to the message.
Regards,
Antonio

Have you deleted the user files in /tmp ? I find that I have to
sometimes delete them twice before gnome loads successfully.
No I did not delete the files in /tmp. Apparently GNOME is back. I do not know what did the trick. Will confirm tomorrow as I boot the machine again. I need to work now on sound.

How do I kill esd/alsa?
This is the same laptop for which there is no sound.
I have trashed the ~/.gnome ~/.gnome2, ~/.gconf
~/.gconfd/ and ~/.gnome2_private/ directories in the
hope that I'll get back gnome, but I have not been
successful. I created two accounts and have logged in
to gnome and as root user copied the .gnome*
directories unto the original account to no avail.
For the meantime, KDE is working awesome, I just need
to yum install klaptop to see how much battery time I
have left.
The users I have created default into GNOME. When I
try to logout, the computer does not repond. When I
try to shutdown. The computer does not respond.
Pressing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE logs me out and/or shows
me when I shutdown or logged out. The other test
machine, everything works except that if I forget to
leave a cd data/or music in one of the drives, I will
not have access to that drive via k3b/nautilus/etc. I
have mentioned this several times, but I guess it is
not important.

Wireless working -> yes
Gnome is back -> yes
Sound -> No, but working on it.
Replying to myself but for completeness of the thread. I got GNOME back as my own user. I do not know exactly what fixed the issue. But GNOME desktop is back. Now to the sound issue.
Thanks,
Antonio

ata2.00 timeouts
by Brian C. Huffman
Running the latest rawhide, I'm getting the following message after the RedHat Nash but before the LVM checks for physical volumes. I have quiet turned out, but I could turn it off to find out exactly where in the kernel load this is happening:
ata2.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
It doesn't seem to cause any problems after the machine has booted, but it takes 4 of these messages before it times out and each one takes quite a few seconds resulting in a significant pause in the boot process.
I'm guessing this is known. Is there anything I can do to help troubleshoot?
Thanks,
Brian

Does not square with what I am seeing (although, admittedly,
this is not a fresh installation). Did you try to look for
errors in various logs? Maybe there was something in
~/.xsession-errors before you clobbered it on the next login?
It sounds like your nautilus process has troubles. Is this
package installed?

Just for the sake of it, I created a new user and I logged in. Things looked ok. When I tried to logout, I clicked ok and it hung. I clicked on the X and it told me to wait or to force quit. I did not want to shut down so I clicked on force quit. I had to ctrl+alt+backspace to log back in to my original account and in KDE since gnome does not work. Should I remove .gnome, .gnome2 directories and hope that the problem goes away or file a BUGZILLA?
Thanks for replying, I was getting desperate and you have saved the day.

Antonio
