X broken
by J M
I have Fedora Core 6 Test 2 running in a virtual machine on a Fedora Core 5
host running VMware Server 1.0. FC6T2 installed fine, however I ran yum -y
update last night, and after getting around a dependency failure with
evolution-data-server and evolution-webecal, installed over 100 updates.
Today I updated another 46 packages when I got home. After that I closed my
terminal and noticed that I was unable to open any application windows.
After clicking on an launcher, what looked like a terminal window would
flash on the screen and then nothing.
I rebooted at that point, and now X will not start in runlevel 5. I have
the system in runlevel 3 and it boots as one would expect, but I cannot get
anything graphical working. X -configure and
system-config-display --reconfig both fail to work properly, and running
startx gets as far as loading the background, and then it looks like panels
and windows attempt to start but all die as fast as they come up. On the
plus side the mouse works, though with just a background it's pretty
useless.
The following is what I consistently have on my display when killing X:
(nautilus:2205): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_uri_new_private:
assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed
nautilus: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined
symbol: cairo_xlib_surface_create
(nautilus:2211): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_uri_new_private:
assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed
(nautilus:2211): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_uri_new_private:
assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed
nautilus: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined
symbol: cairo_xlib_surface_create
(nautilus:2219): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_uri_new_private:
assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed

assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed
nautilus: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined
symbol: cairo_xlib_surface_create
The application 'gnome-session' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.
xinit: connection to X server lost.
To reiterate this is basically a clean install. I installed, updated,
updated a second time, installed firestarter, clamav, and clamav-update
packages from extras before noticing the problem, and then rebooted.
runlevel 3 works, but nothing graphical...

Not sure if this is a bug or OOo being stupid!
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I had to access an excel file. As OOo was dead (prior to today's
update), I installed gnumeric, imported the file into there and when I
was done, exported it (Excel 95/2000)
Nautilus reported the file as being about 12k.
OOo is updated and fixed. Load the file saved out from gnumeric. Made a
number of small changes and saved. It has sky rocketed to 90k!
Is OOo just adding garbage to the end to fool Excel people or is this
actually a bug in either gnumeric or OOo Calc?

FT6t2 Screen Resolution confusion
by Gerry Tool
On first boot, I found my screen resolution at an all time high of
1920x1232 with refresh of 60Hz.
I used System > Preferences > Screen Resolution to set it to a more
comfortable 1600x1200 at 75Hz.
However, the login screen appears to still be at the original 1920x1232
at 60Hz, despite me checking the box "Make default for this
computer...".
I see that there is another System > Administration > Display menu item
which opens a different dialog offering a Resolution setting. However,
this dialog only offers 800x600 and 640x480 and two color depths.
Why is the login screen still at the original resolution? This has
never been the case before - it always tracked the setting I made in
Preferences.
Also, what is the purpose of the Display settings dialog vs the Screen
Resolution dialog?
Thanks.

Suse 10 Frags Fedora
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I attempted to install FC6T2 on a machine that had Suse 10
and Windows installed. The last thing Anaconda announces
is its intention to search for Fedora Core installations.
Then Anaconda blows up. This happens with either graphical
or text install with either x86_64 or 386 DVD.
I removed the Suse partition with a live CD (Finnix) and
was then able to install Fedora.
It is nice to see Fedora drive my 1920x1200 Dell out of the box.
System is an A8N-E with AMD 64 bit CPU, Nvidia NV43 (Geforce 6600).

Re: Firefox is still crazy.
by Dirk Remmelt
Hello Jim
until today I had the same problem with FC 5.91 (FC6 Test2). Because no
update solved it, I looked into it by comparing the used libraries in
programs which had the display problem (i.e. firefox, evolution,
tsclient) and others which hadn't.
The reason for the display problem is the cairo package in the
development repository. By using the latest cairo package of the FC5
update repository there should be no problems.
