That is what I would expect. PCMCIA is ISA bus without DMA support. While
hdparm -u1 /dev/hdwhatever may make the box feel better it can't really
improve on PCMCIA device performance.
But the problem is not there on Redhat 7.3.
There is slow and then there is SSSSLLLLOOOOOWWWWW. (We are talking
hours to read a single CD!)
