Make a data copy:
$ cp -a ~/.thunderbird ~/.thunderbird-bkp
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel
Check with v38 beta2, so you have a reference:
$
wgethttp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/latest-be...
$ tar xf thunderbird-38.0b2.tar.bz2
$ ./thunderbird/thunderbird --version
Thunderbird 38.0
$ ./thunderbird/thunderbird
I think I have done all this as you outlined and this appears to be
Thunderbird 38.0.
Unfortunately it still does not display the text in the
757obscured(a)vzwpix.com text message.
