I installed samba-client (which was not pulled in by
system-config-samba) and was able to do `smbclient -L` to my server.
I can list shares and `ls` within a share just fine from the command
line. The kde kio_slave for smb also works just fine, but that may be
totally seperate code.
What doesn't work is system-config-samba.

yes...but I suppose that you cannot open a shared folder from any
graphical tool...
