Video card is ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF,
a low-end card. My guess is that floaters+Xorg performs many
format conversions of the pixmaps, perhaps due to anti-aliasing
and/or compositing, which low-end hardware does not support well.
Certainly more than onboard-to-screen blit is going on.
I'm beginning to think that there's something wrong with the screensaver itself.
Running the screensaver with the '-s' argument makes it show the
framerate. It's reporting over 40fps here, but the screensaver is
stuttering the whole time. At 40fps, it should be really smooth.
