I *suspect* that if you remove one of /sbin/firmware_helper or
/etc/hotplug/firmware.agent , it will magically start working
again - they're probably racing against each other. :)

No luck. I tried first moving firmware.agent aside, then
firmware_helper, and the modprobe of ipw2200 still had errors and no
device.
