WOOHOO! After creating an xorg.conf using "Xorg -configure", hacking
it to know about my monitor, adding a reasonable display subsection
and including the Option "NoAccel" line in the Device section, I have
a functioning Gnome desktop. Awesome! Thanks for the tip, Michael.

The intel graphics drivers in Fedora 10 are rather flaky. I saw the same
problem, (and just got around to reporting it at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=473809
). Adding the line
Option "NoAccel" "yes"
to the right section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf might help, though I don't
currently have access to the machine I saw it on so I can't test it.
