Not sure if same problem, but min is an Intel HD Graphics 530.
And I am on Cinnamon, using lightdm.
Might be same concept though, as it happens when trying to do an
install,
or if do an upgrade, then it won't start up X at all.
Login on a vtty, then do
dmesg | egrep
'i915_gem_object|intel_prepare_plane_fb|drm_atomic_helper_prepare_planes'
If you get at least one instance of each string, that bug should be a match. If you
can't reach a vtty to login, try a remote login from another machine if you can.
