Network Connection
by Lawrence E Graves
I have just installed the new kernel in Fedora Beta 12 and now I have no
network connection lan or wifi. It works with the other kernel. What
did I do wrong or better yet, what should I do right to make it work. I
heard that it was fixed.

Units with Toshiba-BIOS can't activate external screen until rebooted.
by Tom Mannerhagen
Hi
I have filed the following bug since some time ago:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=521592
If You don't want to go to the link here's a short summary:
Using an external screen to display an extended desktop or clone the
content on the internal screen does not work.
The Display-utility found under System > Preferences can correctly
identify the attached screen, but is not able to activate it.
It behaves as if the external screen is working normally (cloning,
extended desktop) but the external screen remains in power save mode or
at least not reacting at all.
The only way to activate it is to reboot the unit with the external
screen attached from start. Then all functions supported by the display
applet works as expected.
I can even unplug the ext screen, plug it in again and all is still
working as expected.
I was convinced that this was an Intel specific issue, but it seems not.
I have tested 2 nVidia units with the Beta of F12 showing exactly the
same problem as I have seen on the Intel units.
Additional - maybe somewhat redundant info: even Ubuntu 9.10 with the
latest nVidia proprietary driver shows the same problem.
So, it seems I am a bit incorrect in the problem description in the
filed bug mentioned above, since the bug is actual only on the Toshiba's
that have a Toshiba BIOS.
Toshiba's with Phoenix / AMI BIOS'es do not show this issue.
Anyway, this problem was introduced in F11 and has been lurking there
since.
It seems that there is little attention to this bug - is there any other
Toshiba-BIOS-unit-user with similar experience or maybe some nice
workarounds?

Fedora Server distro?

If you want that much Fedora stuff, then just use Fedora. I use Fedora
10 and 11 on several server systems and do not have any issues with that
setup. One server has been Fedora since Core 5 I think. Upgrading takes
about an hour for downloading/updating and checking config files, but I
only do that once a year. Regular updates happen about once a month
after hours when I can reboot the machines.
*Since you have several Fedora servers up and running, may I ask if there
was a howto that you followed or did it all come from you? If you, then
would you be willing to write-up a HOWTO for those of us out there that do
not understand it all or as much as you may or may not???**
Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey*
However, it depends on your particular situation in the end.

SV: Fedora Server distro???
by Birger Monsen
I am typing this on my cell phone so please forgive any artifacts.
Centos is a server distro, and being a recompile of rhel it is a good one. Using fedora for servers means upgrading them more often than you may want.
Look at the centos 3rd party repo that offers fedora packages compiled for centos. Maybe a perfect setup?
Building fedora source rpms on centos is usually not very hard either.

Emne: Fedora Server distro???

Dato: 28.10.2009 04:02
Greetings All:
I have been around redhat and fedora project for a very long time, but I am
asking the question that I probably already have the answer!
With all of the bleeding edge, and my love for it, is there a server distro
out there? I am looking for the help from the rest of you that have more
knowledge than I do!
I appreciate any help that you can give to me in this regard...
Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

Fedora Server distro?

I am assuming you are well aware of RH (paid) and CentOS (free).
Yes, but I never have played around with CentOS yet... I saw that you were
able to create a server out of yours, but do you know if there is a CentOS
Server distro or would you be willing to write up a howto on how you did it?
Recently on the forums, someone mentioned they're running a legacy F2 or
something like that--we still have a few F4 boxes, and actually, they
run rather nicely. We're also very careful of how they're protected.
You said something about protecting them, in regards to what?
If you mean something in between Fedora's bleeding edge and short
lifetime but newer than a 2.6.18 kernel....
I know that some people would think and have said that I am crazy for using
bleeding edge, but I do love it. I may not be able to have the latest and
greatest in computers, but I can play around with the latest and greatest
software versions out there...
Well, I'd be curious to know about it too. I'm surprised no one's
created one. The best compromise that I've seen (at least in theory,
not having used it), is Ubuntu's LTS (Long Term Support) offering--it's
newer, and Debian based things tend to (again, this is all theory) be
easier to upgrade than RH based ones. (Though, again, thanks to the
hard work of many, Fedora seems to be getting better and better at
that.)
I am totally surprised that no one has created a bleeding edge Fedora Server
distro either! I would love to see one for sure...
One can, with some work, get CentOS to work relatively well as a
desktop--I'm sort of writing this from there (actually ssh-ing into a
BSD box, but from my CentOS workstation-cum-desktop-cum-
server.)
Would you be willing to write a howto off from the work that you have done
in getting CentOS to work as a server for you? I do not know enough about
it to make it work. There is a guideline of creating a Fedora Server on
http://www.brennan.id.au, but it is so out of date now....
My very general, uninformed, subjective impression from Fedora forums is
that such a beast would be welcomed.
>
> I appreciate any help that you can give to me in this regard...
I don't know if this was any help at all, but the good thing about
posting something vague like it, is that it will inspire someone who
knows better to jump in and correct me. :)
Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey
