I had the exact same problem using just the OSS radeon driver. I
swapped the video card from a cheap PCI radeon to a AGP radeon 9500.
Well, if you swap the video card, s-c-display will run. But it's
being run as root, so I don't see why it would ask for the root
password. Perhaps usermode/pam_console is confused.
