I had this same problem on my powerbook G4. I had to unmute the master
volume in alsamixer. I couldn't get the alsammixer to work in the GUI,
only in command line. After unmuting, try running
system-config-soundcard. Should work after that.

Okay, what's missing after running s-c-s and then stracing alsamixer...:
access("/etc/asound.conf", R_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
access("/root/.asoundrc", R_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
open("/dev/aloadC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDWR) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
open("/dev/aloadC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDWR) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
I'd assumed udev would've created these upon finding the device... any
ideas?
