question about rawhide vs beta (maybe dumb)
by Scott Seagroves
I have a feeling this is a dumb question but there is a chance that
there's something I don't understand here, and I want to clear it up:
If I use yum or apt to go from RH9 to rawhide, then am I basically
testing the beta? Aside from the installer, of course, I understand
that I won't be testing that. But what about the rest? Is that an ok
way to "get" to Severn (or Severn2 or whatever the next beta is called)?
Thanks in advance -

Would busybox be more valuable, statically linked?
by Mark Mielke
Like /sbin/sash, wouldn't /sbin/busybox be more valuable if it were
statically linked?
Of course, I am mostly thinking about init=/sbin/busybox as a kernel option
to aid during recovery in cases where /sbin/sash does not provide enough
functionality... :-)
Cheers,
mark

some bugs related to korean chracters in severn
by Brian Lee
Hi, I found follow bugs.
* Some box line is appears in typing Korean chracters in
gnome-terminal with ami. But the box is disappeared when typing
space. (http://www.senux.com/tmp/archive/severn/korean_gnome_terminal.png)
* I think the default Korean font in Mozilla is not pretty. I
think many Korean people likt gulim fonts instead of batang. Better
to set gulim as default in distribution configuration.
- Ugly (default now) :
- Pretty:
* The Ami is in gnome pannel. You know ami is an
IM(input method) program and I think it is better to
place ami in the tray of gnome panel. (Near the clock)
- ami in gnome panel (now) -
(http://www.senux.com/tmp/archive/severn/korean_ami_in_gnome_panel.png)
* I set the default language to Korean. Korean chracters
in console mode are all broken. I think it is better to use
English locale in console mode. The customized version of
RedHat Linux before like alzza linux, the locale in console
mode was something like "C" so the chracters are not broken.
* Can't input Korean in gaim. When I didn't type space or
non-Korean chracters at the end of each line, the line is
not sent to buddy.
* (This is not specific one to Korean) The gnome panel is
dead too often. I tried to report the bug but I can't because
the bug report program is dead too.
* Korean chracter are not shown in OpenOffice. (writer, calc,
impress) Korean is shonw input bar above cells in calc but not shown
in cell box. Korean in writer, impress is not shown. The the
Korean chracters are show in just dots.
The openoffice are in gnome panel as default configuration and I
think many people will click it. So this should be fixed or
the default icon in gnome panel sholud replace to other programs.
Thank you!

Jim,
As I said in my first post, I was able to receive e-mail immediately after
restoring my ~/evolution directory from the tarball. I didn't say it
that's a POP connection, but it is.
The SMTP exchange detailed in my earlier message was actually interleaved
with a POP3 exchange. I'm posting the whole 49-line Send/Receive exchange
as an attachment to this message.

up2date -d doesn't handle updated up2date rpms well
by nosp
Hi,
up2date --nox -d -u gets itself into a loop if up2date updates are
downloaded. It seems to be thinking: 1) download all new rpms; 2) check
for updated versions of up2date; 3) if up2date updates are present,
prepare to restart after installing up2date; 4) install up2date unless
"-d" has been specified; 5) regardless of #4 completing, because of #3,
goto #1.
As you can see, "-d" causes a loop with this logic that up2date can't
break out of. I have observed this today on my severn box. Wanted to
check that this wasn't a problem on my end or other misunderstanding on
my part before filing a bug. Am I overlooking something?

*critical* bug in gdm-2.4.4.0-2 from rawhide?
by Elton Woo
I have now re-installed the Severn beta *twice*. What has happened is
that after installing the latest updates from rawhide (to 06 Sep. 03), I
cannot re-login. The GDM would complain that either an incorrect
user ID or password was entered... however, I have *carefully*
rechecked that I had entered the corredt PWD (since I even had it
*written* down, and my user id name is just 3 letters long.
Even attempting to login as root, I still could not login. I got the
usual error message ( ... verify that your Caps lock isn't on,
etc...)
On my _most recent_ install (today, 07 Sep.), I made it a point
NOT to download and update to gdm-2.4.4.0-2.i386.rpm.
Has anyone else noticed this behavoir with this version of gdm?
Elton.

Why xcdroast and not gcombust?
by Steve Bergman
I was just wondering why xcdroast gets included as the standard cd
writer and not gcombust. I always end up frustrated with xcdroast and
gcombust is quite friendly. Also, it's obvious how to write an existing
iso image with gcombust and I don't see that xcdroast can even do it.
Plus gcombust fits in nicely with Bluecurve and is at least a GTK app,
whereas xcdroast is, well, whatever it is. I there a licensing issue or
something?
Then again, eventually, I suppose, nautilus will do it all.
Just curious.

FOLLOWUP: reiser4 not currently available with 2.6.0-test4-bk9
by Robert P. J. Day
based on a short conversation with someone who should know, the
currently downloadable patches you can get from www.namesys.com
will not give you a buildable kernel with support for reiser4.
according to my source ("deep source" :-), we can look for support
perhaps after 2.6.0-test5 becomes available.

Opinions about MAXIMUM_PARTS crippling in util-linux-2.11r-miscfixes.patch
by Wojtek.Pilorz
Somewhere between RHL 6.2 and RHL 7.3 there was a patch added for
util-linux which limits number of partitions which fdisk can handle to 15.
(MAXIMUM_PARTS #define in fdisk.h changed from 60 to 16)
My understanding is that this has been done to mask a bug in Microsoft
Windows 2000 which goes into infinite loop going back and forth
through the disk when it sees 16 or more partitions.
With this patch user of RHL fdisk cannot make such MS-irritating disk
setup.
Unfortunately the patch limits usefulness of the system for users which do
not use MS software or which use other workarounds (like using 0x85 Linux
extended partition), and who need more than 15 partitions on IDE disk.
I would be happy to see the patch mentioned either removed or modified
in such a way, that it could be run-time disabled if a users insists.
I would appreciate any thoughts and opionions.
Best regards,
Wojtek
