invalid default action for smb shares in nautilus
by Pavel Rosenboim

I'm trying to browse my windows lan with nautilus. When I double click
on a computer icon, I get a list of shares on that machine. When I
double-click any share icon, I get error message saying
"The action associated with "share-name" is invalid.
You can configure GNOME to associate a different application or viewer
with this file type. Do you want to associate an application or viewer
with this file type now? "
If I type "smb://server/share-name" in location bar, nautilus displays
the contents of shared directory.
I'm using nautilus 2.3.90-2 and samba 3.0.0-5rc1 from rawhide.
Anyone else see similar behavior?
Pavel.

Sorry to say that I don't have a USB keyboard.
I tried to install 9 from a floppy and had the same problem; nousb option
seemed to help but the installation had to be cancelled at a later point.
Whenever the next beta comes out I'll give it a try, but for now, I guess
I'll stick to 8.

2.6 test kernels and ACPI.
by Pavel Rosenboim
Hi,
I'm using acpid with 2.6 test kernels (from Arjan's RPMs). After I
installed the latest test4 kernel, acpid stopped working with error
'file /proc/acpi/events not found'. Did anything change in latest 2.6.0
tests?

up2date problems with aspell and xemacs-el
by Robert G. (Doc) Savage
Up2date works again since updating the RHNS-CA-CERT files, but it keeps
saying I need to upgrade aspell and xemacs-el. When I select those
packages and proceed, I get a Warning window saying:
"Test install failed because of package conflicts:
package aspell-0.50.3-15 is already installed
package xemacs-3l-21.4.13-4 is already installed"
I've run 'up2date -p' multiple times, but the problem persists. When I
check the version of up2date itself, I get this:
# rpm -qa | grep up2date
up2date-3.1.46-2
error: rpmdbNextIterator: skipping h# 920 Header V3 DSA signature:
BAD, key ID 897da07a
up2date-gnome-3.1.46-2
Is anyone else seeing this?

reiser4 on severn and 2.6.0-test4-bk9??
by Robert P. J. Day
has anyone been ambitious enough to apply the reiser4 patches
to the latest 2.6.0-test4 kernel and play with reiser4? i ask
since the instructions at www.namesys.com are a mite confusing.
under DOWNLOAD, there's a link to "reiser for 2.6", which states
that you should first apply the patches (note *plural* here) from
http://www.namesys.com/snapshots .
there are, in fact, two diff files there, but they have the
puzzling names
reiser4-kernelonly.diff (23k)
reiser4.diff (2.6m)
puzzling because i would have thought the patch file(s) would
have been pretty much exclusively for patching the kernel.
as a test, i applied the larger patch file, at which point,
the smaller one *appeared* to be superfluous.
so, can someone explain the difference between the two patch
files, given that the smaller one seems unnecessary? or am i
just misreading things?

small oops in 2.6.0-test4-bk9
by Robert P. J. Day
again, for those staying on top of the test4 kernel series, there was a
small typo that was introduced, according to its author, as a result of an
editor configuration issue.
in a nutshell (note the extraneous "R" that shouldn't be there):

new issue related to 2.6.0-test4 kernels and nvidia
by Robert P. J. Day
for those who are, for personal enlightenment and edification,
keeping up with the latest 2.6.0-test4 kernel, if you have an
NVIDIA chipset and are moving up to bitkeeper version bk8 or bk9,
you'll need to download the new patch to the NVIDIA driver from
www.minion.de, which deals with the removal of a single symbol
"kdev_val".
i'm assuming that, if you've been following along until now,
you're already familiar with the procedure to download the
NVIDIA driver and apply that patch.

Dia not working because of libxslt
by Santiago Erquicia
I was trying to use dia and when I try to open it says:
Could not load XSLT library (/usr/lib/libxslt.so) : /usr/lib/libxslt.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I checked and it's right, but I have libxslt.so.1 that points to
libxslt.so.1.0.32
I made a link from libxslt.so to libxslt.so.1 and everything was fine.
The package is libxslt-1.0.32

Kai,
My Ethereal trace is very similar to the one in that thread. Note step
10:
1. My client initiates a SMTP session with a TCP 3-way handshake to my
ISP's SMTP server's standard smtp port:
lioness smtp.peaknet.net TCP 32818 > smtp [SYN]
Seq=3593689985 Ack=0 Win=5840 Len=0
smtp.peaknet.net lioness TCP smtp > 32818 [SYN, ACK]
Seq=3480868317 Ack=3593689986 Win=5792 Len=0
lioness smtp.peaknet.net TCP 32818 > smtp [ACK]
Seq=3593689986 Ack=3480868318 Win=5840 Len=0
2. The server responds, identifying itself with a welcome banner:
smtp.peaknet.net lioness SMTP Response: 220 nsi01.peaknet.net
ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.8/8.12.8; Mon, 25 Aug 2003 22:50:33 -0500
3. My client acknowledge that response:
lioness smtp.peaknet.net TCP 32818 > smtp [ACK]
Seq=3593689986 Ack=3480868403 Win=5840 Len=0
4. My client tells the server it understands SMTP extensions:
lioness smtp.peaknet.net SMTP Command: EHLO e
*** NOTE: My client's name is not 'e' ***
5. The server sends a TCP ACK of the EHLO command:
smtp.peaknet.net lioness TCP smtp > 32818 [ACK]
Seq=3480868403 Ack=3593689995 Win=5792 Len=0
6. The server responds to the EHLO command, indicating it is ready to
proceed:
smtp.peaknet.net lioness SMTP Response: 250-nsi01.peaknet.net
Hello as1-6-187.peaknet.net [208.4.19.187], pleased to meet you
7. My client sends a TCP ACK of that response:
lioness smtp.peaknet.net TCP 32818 > smtp [ACK]
Seq=3593689995 Ack=3480868643 Win=6432 Len=0
8. Preliminaries complete, my client starts the send mail cycle:
lioness smtp.peaknet.net SMTP Command: MAIL
FROM:<dsavage(a)peaknet.net>
9. The server validates my account:
smtp.peaknet.net lioness SMTP Response: 250 2.1.0
<dsavage(a)peaknet.net>... Sender ok
10. My client aborts (HUH???):
lioness smtp.peaknet.net SMTP Command: QUIT
11. Both sides shut the down TCP connection:
smtp.peaknet.net lioness SMTP Response: 221 2.0.0
nsi01.peaknet.net closing connection
lioness smtp.peaknet.net TCP 32818 > smtp [RST]
Seq=3593690034 Ack=0 Win=0 Len=0
smtp.peaknet.net lioness TCP smtp > 32818 [FIN, ACK]
Seq=3480868737 Ack=3593690034 Win=5792 Len=0
lioness smtp.peaknet.net TCP 32818 > smtp [RST]
Seq=3593690034 Ack=0 Win=0 Len=0
This suggests to me that (a) my evolution client is misconfigured, or
(b) there's a bug in Severn's version of evolution.

Perhaps, just perhaps you're all thinking about this all wrong. Instead
of worrying about RedHat providing links to Java, and RealPlayer, etc.
Perhaps instead we should be more worried about getting the vendors of
said products to put prominent download links to their players on their
website. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to find some burried
link to the linux version of their codec.
Note: I'm not fond of Macromedia's "installer" for their Flash plugin.
I have this sinking feeling that I'll need to re-install it the next
time I upgrade mozilla using the new RPM that'll come down the line.
