kde4 testing questions
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello, I'm trying kde4 as provided in upcoming F10.
Some questions:
- I would like to see on the panel only the icons of applications
running in the current desktop and not of all of them. Is it possible?
- I'm using 177.82 version of nvidia proprietary driver (from
rpmfusion). It seems that this version should resolve the problems
raised in the past with kde4 without using particular settings in
xorg.conf. Is it true?
I'm not using any compositing (compiz or kwin) at this moment but
sometimes I see sluggish movement of windows and delays... that I
don't see in gnome
I'm using an xps M1330 with GeForce 8400M GS video card with its
13.3" monitor plus a 19" one connected via vga
My xorg.conf at the moment is something like this lines below.
Thanks,
Gianluca

webcam support - f10 preview+
by Development discussions related to Fedora
Hi, especially to Hans for his work on web cam stuff,
So I got my:
Logitech QuickCam Express Plus 046d:092f spca561 integrated works cam
showing an image on updated f10 preview, where previously I had no luck
when I had tested a couple of months back with a booting a rawhide
kernel on F9 machine and so forth.
However, what I did notice:
- image is extremely dark by default - to the point that I didn't think
it was working at all, until I picked it up and accidentally pointed it
at the room light ;)
- eventually found v4l2ucp which gives: white balance, exposure,
gain, auto gain controls.
- the image is quote grainy / blurry -even after best attempt with the
focus ring.
Having never used the particular cam under winxp, I don't know how good
the image should be but expected it to be reasonable.
Does this sound typical for this device {on a usb2 port on a 1 year old
laptop}, or perhaps there is something screwy with my setup [or do I
need 500W floodlights in my living room] ?

386 rawhide install panics looking for /initt
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Either pxeboot or boot.iso Rawhide 386 install can't find /init
and panics. This has been the case for the last few days, on
two different motherboards. The 64 bit install does not have
this panic.

Wrong xdpyinfo info for 15.4" monitor
by José Abílio Matos
I am using a 15.4" laptop running rawhide. The native resolution of this
monitor is 1680*1050. The graphics card is a according to Xorg.0.log:
(--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility X600 (M24) 3150 (PCIE)" (ChipID
= 0x3150)
Running with no xorg.conf file I get the following result for
screen #0:
dimensions: 1680x1050 pixels (444x277 millimeters)
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
This is wrong, of course.
Creating an xorg.conf file with system-config-display and adding the screen
size I have the following in section in xorg.conf:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "LCD Panel 1680x1050"
HorizSync 31.5 - 65.5
VertRefresh 56.0 - 65.0
DisplaySize 332 207
Option "dpms"
EndSection
Now in Xorg.0.log I get:
(**) RADEON(0): Display dimensions: (332, 207) mm
(**) RADEON(0): DPI set to (128, 206)
...
(II) RADEON(0): Setting screen physical size to 444 x 277
resize called 1680 1050
I think that second dpi is wrong it should probably be something around
126-128. And at the same the driver is ignoring the file settings. :-(
Is this known? If it is a bug where should it be reported? xorg-x11-drv-ati?
Regards,

ATI Radeon Woes on F10...
by Christopher A Williams
I'm working to get accelerated graphics working on my ThinkPad T400
(Model 2765-T6U). In Discreete Graphic mode, it runs the ATI Mobility
Radeon HD3470 video chip set. So far:
* The fglrx drivers from RPMFusion are horrid (amazingly slow)
* The stock Radeon drivers work OK
* The experimental Radeon HD driver works OK
None of the above seems to support 3D graphics. Does anyone have
something working with this? Having become addicted to eye candy
displays, I suddenly find myself needing to get my "Compiz fix".
As an aside, if I run with the Intel Internal Graphics instead, Compiz
and Desktop Effects do work, but it's slower and a number of Open GL
stiff doesn't work at all.
Cheers,
Chris

f10 groupinstall KDE
by Adam Pribyl
In F9 I welcomed, that it was possible to install whole KDE group just by
yum groupinstall KDE
but in F10 no go. The group name is again "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
and what is worse, as those group names are localized to various languages,
you can not use those localized group names for installations. So
yum grouplist
will show you the group name in you language, but you can not do
yum groupinstall 'KDE (K pracovni prostredi)'
Bug or feature?

Testing extending encrypted root file system
by Tom London
I installed F10Spin2, and selected "encrypted" for root. So grub
boots root with "root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00".
I would like to test extending VolGroup00/LogVol00 by adding a
partition that currently contains an NTFS file system (/dev/sda2).
Googling yields the following recipe:
1. "pvcreate /dev/sda2"
2. "vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/sda2"
3. "lvextend -l +100%PVS /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 /dev/sda2"
4. "cryptsetup resize luks-XXXXXX" (where luks-XXXXXX is the name
shown in /dev/mapper/luks*)
5. "resizefs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00"
Before I possibly blow away my root fs, I thought I would ask:
1. Can the above be done on an active root, or must I do this with the
Live/Rescue CD?
2. Does the above order look right, that is, pvcreate -> vgextend ->
lvextend -> cryptsetup resize -> resizefs
3. I notice there is "lvresize" as well. Any differences of note?
This the "right way" to do this? Other suggestions/recommendations
(besides backing up first ;) )?
I presume this will "automagically" extend the encryption to the new
PV/extent of the LV. Right?
Apologize if this is Fedora-documented somewhere. Pointers welcome!
Thanks,
tom

F10 x64 PR Reloaded: My 2nd install on Homebuilt Box
by Christopher A Williams
After going through all of the feedback from last time, I decided to try
a few new things with my system and F10 x64PR. Install is still buggy
and prone to havoc, but it seems a couple of days makes a big
difference. As a recap, here's my system config:
Motherboard:
eVGA e7100/630i
This MB uses nVidia onboard GeForce 7100 video with the nForce 630i
chipset. It also uses nVidia MCP73 High Definition Audio
CPU: Intel 2.4GHZ Core2 Quad
4GB RAM
320GB Western Digital SATA drive (WDC_WD3200AAKS)
Monitor: Acer P243W (connected via DVI cable)
What I did this time around:
I grabbed a fresh copy of the F10 x64 Preview Live ISO, and reloaded a
USB drive with it using a 2GB persistent overlay.
I also took the time to go through CMOS on my system - just to make sure
nothing was amiss. It was previously set to the "Optimized Defaults". I
reloaded the "Optimized Defaults" again, and went through each setting.
I changed a couple of settings around CPU Identification - the default
is for Windows XP, and it was recommended to change this if you were
running any other OS.
Next, I booted the USB drive. Same as before - no video. I rebooted and
passed the xdriver=vesa kernel parameter. No change.
So, I switched to an alternate console, logged in as root, and ran yum
-y update to update everything on the USB drive. This included a kernel
update (to the 105 kernel), as well as updates to anaconda. The kernel
update actually took a normal amount of time (not 20 minutes it did on
my system post-install before). Could this be a CMOS change fixing this?
Next, I rebooted on the USB drive. Still no video. I switched to an
alternate terminal (again), logged in as root, installed
system-config-display, ran it, and accepted the defaults. This
apparently created a basic xorg.conf file. I reboot one more time and,
voila! I have a graphical (vesa based) GDM login panel!
I login as Live User. The desktop remains stable. Good! I decide to "go
for it" and launch the installer program. This time, everything works
perfectly!!! Disk partitioning works with no issues, and there's no long
delay installing anything. So far so good...
I reboot from the local hard disk. Of course, the 9.93 preview is what
launches, and of course, there's no video. Since I installed from the
Live Image, all of the old files get installed. So I do my alternate
terminal, login as root, run all of the yum updates, install
system-config-display, and run it to create a basic xorg.conf file. I
noted that, during the updates, the kernel update again proceeds in
normal time. I reboot once more, and F10 comes up with a GUI firstboot
screen! Good...! I go through everything, click finish, and I have a GDM
login screen (at vesa 800x600) resolution. Better!
Login, load up RPMFusion repos, grab the nVidia drivers, reboot one last
time, and we're good to go with a base install of F10.
Post-install, I grab all of the stuff I usually use from the online
repos, plus Adobe Reader and the new 64-bit Flash 10 Plugin (alpha). So
far, everything is working. Although, there are a couple of selinux
related issues with the Adobe stuff. The selinux troubleshooter does
help you fix them.
The only thing left is that sound still doesn't play unless I test it
first. It's like I need that to kickstart it. Looks like I'll have to
bugzilla that...
Hopefully this means F10 final will be able to install reasonably well.
We still need to do something about video though. Mine would still do
nothing - even using vesa drivers - unless there was at least a basic
xorg.conf file present.
Cheers,
Chris

PPP under F10?
by Don Harper
So, under F9, I had PPP working just fine via bluetooth to my cell
phone. Not so under F10.
Running F10 fully patched as of a few hours ago. My two issues are that
the rfcomm bind rfcomm0 does not happen automatically when I start the
bluetooth service and that after I started it manually is it tells me
that ``The serial port could not be locked'' even though there is no
reference to the pppd option locked in any of the /etc/ppp or wvdial
files.
Thoughts? Any handy RTFM pointers? A search of bugzilla did not turn
anything up. If this should JustWork, I will turn in a report..
