updating my kernel just trashed my machine
by Robert P. J. Day
after "yum update kernel", reboot:
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while ...
Volume group "VolGroup" not found
Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup/lv_swap)
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
at this point, i think it's time to wipe the machine and wait for
the next attempt. life is too short for this.

Rawhide pxeboot install fails if a Linux exists on the machine
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I have successfully installed Rawhide on two different machines,
but only after removing any existing Linux copies. Otherwise
there is an unhandled exception relating to the existence of
previous versions of Linux.
At this point I don't know if ANY Linux will cause the install
to crash, or just a Fedora Linux.
It's been some time now (weeks) since Rawhide install could handle
the existience of an older Fedora on the machine. I like to do a fresh
Rawhide install since continual yumming eventually results in a
corrupted Rawhide system.

git-1.6.0.6-3.fc9 (FEDORA-2009-2329)
Core git tools
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
This update to git-1.6.0.6 brings a number of improvements to git users.
Numerous bugs have been fixed, both in the packaging and in the upstream
release. Among the notable package changes, the default directory used by
git-daemon has moved from /srv/git to /var/lib/git, in order to be consistent
with current F10/F11 packages and Fedora's Packaging Guidelines. For full
details on package changes, see the package changelog. For upstream changes,
see the upstream release notes:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/RelNotes-1.6.0.txt
http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/RelNotes-1.6.0.1.txt

http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/RelNotes-1.6.0.5.txt
http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/RelNotes-1.6.0.6.txt An
important difference from the upstream release notes is that these packages do
*not* move the git-* commands out of PATH.

pinot-0.90-1.fc9 (FEDORA-2009-2316)
Personal search and metasearch for the Desktop
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Update to new upstream release: - Unicode text. Charset conversion errors
are better handled, tokenizing was improved and leads to far less "rubbish"
terms. Issues the UI had with non-Latin locales were resolved - Web metasearch.
Plugins were updated, extracts and results URLs are more accurate. - more
coherent UI. Some features were previously only available in search mode,
others in browse mode; some were duplicated. The new menu layout tries to unify
both modes. The status window' refresh is smoother. Preferences can be open
separately from the UI. Spelling suggestions are less invasive, they pop up in
the same tabs as queries results. - improved More Like This. Stored queries
generated on More Like This don't include the original query's terms, stopwords,
infrequent terms or similar terms if the stemming language is set. - command-
line and desktop integration. pinot-cd.sh implements a "tagged cd", and lets
one change the shell's current directory to the directory that matches the path
elements passed as parameter. The Deskbar module shows snippets when used with
Deskbar 2.24. - more flexible daemon. The daemon is smarter at crawling
symlinks, it skips those that refer to locations that have been crawled or that
it knows will be crawled. It is much better at resuming where it stopped after
user interruption. While user-set meta-data would previously be lost on a
reindex, or when the file changed on the disk, it's now preserved.

hdf-4.2r4-1.fc10 (FEDORA-2009-2315)
A general purpose library and file format for storing scientific data
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Update to 4.2r4 - Added new API SDgetdatasize to retrieve the compressed and
original sizes of an SDS' data. - The following Fortran APIs were added in this
release: sfgetname sfgetnamelen
sfgmaxopenf sfgnumopenf sfrmaxopenf
sfidtype sfgnvars_byname sfn2indices -
hrepack output now includes dataset compression ratios. - hdp now displays
various parameters of Gzip, Szip, and Skipping Huffman compressions when a
dataset is compressed. - hrepack previously failed to preserve unlimited
dataset dimensions; they are now preserved. - SDreaddata now checks for out-of-
range values in the parameter 'stride' and fails when invalid values are given.
- Reading a record variable using nc API fills the buffer with fill values up to
the maximum number of records of all unlimited dimension variables in the file,
as in netCDF. It used to fail before. - When the file name is too long, some
SD APIs caused a segmentation fault. This problem is now fixed.

libmicrohttpd-0.4.0a-1.fc10 (FEDORA-2009-2331)
Lightweight library for embedding a webserver in applications
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
- Update to version 0.4.0a - This version introduces a API bump (which is
required for supporting large files on 32bit environments) - The license issues
we had with version 0.3.1 of this package (as discussed in #457924) are resolved
in this version. The license of this package is now changed to LGPLv2+ - Added a
patch to fix a testcases on 64bit environments (upstream bug #1459) Upstream
release notes: As you know, Sagie Amir has been working to get SSL/TLS support
added to libmicrohttpd. After seeing a decent number of complex tests pass I'm
now reasonably confident that SSL/TLS-support is working sufficiently well for a
general release. Furthermore, quite a few minor bugs (some of which were
reported to the list here) have also been fixed in the meantime. Note that the
last one of the bugfixes --- adding 64-bit support for 32-bit platforms ---
breaks backwards-compatibility. Changes to clients using libmicrohttpd should
be minimal (most clients will need to change an "unsigned int" to a "size_t" and
a "size_t" to an "uint64_t" in the arguments of two callbacks). - Update to

mingw32-nsis-2.43-6.fc10 (FEDORA-2009-2298)
Nullsoft Scriptable Install System
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Adds native 64-bit builds. Obsoletes third-party nsis and nsis-data packages.
Disables the non-functional NSIS Menu, thus dropping the wxGTK dependency.
Builds the native Fedora executables with the standard Fedora compiler flags for
optimization and security (RPM_OPT_FLAGS). Disables debugging information for
the cross-built installer stubs and plugins because Fedora's debugging
information extractor cannot extract them into the -debuginfo package and NSIS
does not deal with debugging information in the stubs properly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ChangeLog:
* Tue Mar 3 2009 Kevin Kofler <Kevin(a)tigcc.ticalc.org> - 2.43-6
- Don't build the MinGW parts with debugging information, NSIS corrupts the
debugging information in the stubs when building installers from them
- Drop debian-debug-opt patch, all its changes are either taken care of by our
rpm-opt patch, unwanted (see above) or unneeded
* Wed Feb 25 2009 Kevin Kofler <Kevin(a)tigcc.ticalc.org> - 2.43-5
- Use RPM_OPT_FLAGS for the natively-built parts
* Wed Feb 25 2009 Kevin Kofler <Kevin(a)tigcc.ticalc.org> - 2.43-4

pinot-0.90-1.fc10 (FEDORA-2009-2313)
While user-set meta-data would previously be lost on a
reindex, or when the file changed on the disk, it's now preserved.

pipviewer-0.3.9-5.fc10 (FEDORA-2009-2345)
Visualizer for multiple alignments of genomic sequences
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Pipviewer is a visualizer for multiple alignements of genomic sequences. It
highlights conserved regions and allows basic anotations. Its main goal is to
find conserved probes for the construction of gene order data sets. Selected
regions marked as 'probes' can be expoxted to fasta format. It can also
retreive gene annotations form the NBCI and display this information along the
alignement. * Sat Feb 28 2009 Fabian Affolter <fabian(a)bernewireless.net> -

Another thing to test
by Matthias Clasen
I have just built gnome-session 2.25.92, which is supposed to bring
session saving back. I haven't tested this at all myself, so I don't
know what shape it is in. Might be a fun thing to test...I know some
people really missed session saving.

Fedora Test Day - Anaconda Storage Rewrite
by James Laska
Greetings testers,
This week's Test Day will focus on a quiet but important feature. If
done properly you won't know anything changed. The Fedora installers
(anaconda) concept of managing storage is changing from the ground up.
As stated in the Feature scope [1]:
"All of anaconda's code for creating and configuring disk
partitions, LVM, mdraid, dmraid, multipath, iSCSI, LUKS devices,
and filesystems is being rewritten."
Dave Lehman and Chris Lumens from the anaconda development team will be
available for discussion+guidance. Given the raw nature of the code at
this point, rather than outlining specific detailed test cases ...
Robert Williams is pulling together a set of test areas with some
exploratory test guidance. We don't expect all paths to be fully
functional. We need your help collecting data on the myriad storage
environments you run anaconda in. This data will be used to re-factor
future installer storage+partitioning testing and help identify any
development gaps.
Please join #fedora-qa this Thursday, March 5, 2009 to get some hands on
time with the revamped anaconda storage code. Follow the action at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/2009-03-05.
Thanks,
James

some of my gateway laptops refuse to install f11a i386
by Robert P. J. Day
i am having some of the strangest behaviour on my collection of
gateway mx7120 laptops. since they're 64-bit amd athlon mobile
processors, i should theoretically be able to install either of 32- or
64-bit f11 alpha on them, no?
however, over yesterday and today, i've found at least three of them
that will, under no circumstances, even *look* at the i386 version of
the install DVD and will boot to the hard drive, but will happily
install off the x86_64 version. i take that i386 install DVD, put in
what should be an identical laptop next to it, and it will install off
of it just fine. i put it back in the original laptop, it's ignored.
what the heck? and i now have at least three laptops that seem
utterly uninterested in the i386 f11alpha DVD.
can this be a BIOS setting of some kind? this doesn't seem
arbitrary or random, it's a very specific set of laptops that will
just ignore the i386 install DVD. thoughts?
