I totally agree that wider/narrower should work the same as bolder/lighter.
I'm not sure I agree with how you are interpreting the spec though but I can
definitely see the ambiguity in the way font-weight is defined in the 2.1 spec.
This is something we should get cleared up with the 2.1 spec and describe more
clearly in the CSS3 Fonts spec.
