Bug ID: 1645763
Summary: ClearType enablement: strong color fringing that is
not present in vanilla build from freetype git
Product: Fedora
Version: 29
Component: freetype

Scrrenshot of package and git FreeType font rendering
Description of problem:
I usually compile from source to stay up to date. Tried the new
ClearType-enabled package and got strong color fringing that I don't see in
vanilla source builds.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.9.1-6
How reproducible:
1. Turn on subpixel rendering in GNOME Tweak Tools, restart GNOME shell and
look at fonts.
2. Compile freetype from upstream source and LD_PRELOAD it for Firefox, etc.
Actual results: See screenshot.zip -> package.png
Expected results: See screenshot.zip -> git.png
Also:
I don't think you need freetype-2.9-ftsmooth.patch. I don't even think you need
to define the SUBPIXEL_RENDERING option at all, since FT comes with a different
and maybe not patent encumbered subpixel rendering method by default and I
couldn't tell the difference in quickly switching screenshots.

DELTA and Serbian BE in Liberation 2
Description of problem:
On Lubuntu 17.04 & Libreoffice 5.3.1.2, the shape of Serbian Cyrillic BE in
Liberation Serif v.2 looks uncannily like Greek DELTA. The shape in version 1
seems to me more appropriate.
I added two attachments for the two versions of Liberation Serif: on both Greek
DELTA is on the right for the sake of comparison.

Dear developers,
it would be nice if the liberation-serif font would support ligatures as this
looks nicer in longer texts.

I noticed this after upgrading Fedora 26->27, specifically from:
freetype-2.7.1-10.fc26.x86_64
lato-fonts-2.015-3.fc26.noarch
to:
freetype-2.8-8.fc27.x86_64
lato-fonts-2.015-4.fc27.noarch
Not sure if the problem is in Freetype or the Lato font. Rendering of all fonts
on my system changed visibly after upgrading, but Lato in particular changed
quite noticeably. However the only problem seems to be with the "ti" ligature
in Lato, so I assume it is some wrong/missing hinting data on that ligature. I
don't see any problem with other ligatures like "fi".
Screenshot showing the problem is attached.
This is using Lato, size 12, as my GTK UI font in Xorg:
$ xrdb -q | grep Xft
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.rgba: rgb
Xft.dpi: 110
