problems with today's rawhide
by Alexandre Oliva
In preparation to test1, I've just given today's rawhide a try. Here
are some problems I've run into:
rescuecd boot screen still says Fedora Core 1
vg* tools in rescuecd are now useless, should ideally be mapped to lvm
(2) cmds
pump fails to obtain dhcp configuration for rescue or install.
offering network info by hand enables it to mount the install image
over NFS. network card is rtl8139. dhcpd on the server says:
5 bad udp checksums in 5 packets
fallback_discard: Resource temporarily unavailable
booting with `linux ks', it attempts to determine network info twice:
before asking any questions, and after asking for install location
this probably only happens when the initial DHCP query fails
lots of `numerical sysctl 1 {23,49} is obsolete' in vt4
while installing in text mode (and also in rescue mode), when it looks
for existing installations, it prints `/dev/hdc: open failed:
Read-only file system' and garbles the screen a little bit. In disk
druid, it prints it several times. /dev/hdc is the CD drive. This
messages seems to come from lvm, that prints this error whenever it
scans for physical volumes. The presence of LVM1 physical volumes
might be a trigger.

gui and ssh logins exit immediately, and so does VT login without
security context. with security context, it asks for role and type,
and nothing seems to work. selinux doesn't seem to work, at all. cat
/selinux/context fails with invalid argument, and getconlist fails to
write to it similarly. I couldn't find other ways to create accounts
that would get a functional login.
vi won't run on a full install, it can't find libperl.so. It looks in
5.8.2 internal perl lib dir, but only 5.8.{0,1,3} are available.
Karsten is aware of the problem already.

Fedora Bug Day Tomorrow: Jan 28th 2004: Bugzilla versus Mothra
by Jef Spaleta
What:
Fedora Bug Day: General Fedora Triage
Why:
Bugs bad...Closing bugs good
Who:
Everybody and anybody who wants to help developers make better use of
their time. Programming experience, isn't necessary to make a worthwhile
contribution to the triaging effort. But programmers are welcome to. Who
knows you might even stumble on a bug you can fix by submitting your own
patch! For the rest of us, just digging into bugzilla and finding
bugreports to mark as duplicates can help save developers some time.
How:
Simply pick an existing Fedora Core bug to triage, jump on the
#fedora-bugs during the stated times on Weds Jan 28th and convince
me that the bug should be closed or marked up as a high priority for
review.
When:
Jan 28th 9am EST (or right after i get my first cup of coffee) to let's
say 6pm-ish EST (right before my wife tells me I need to drive her home
from work). Allow of course for some gaps in between when my boss and
found my hiding place and needs me to do something.
No Clue What I'm talking about when I say the phrase Fedora Triage?
Take a quick look at the fedora-triage-list archives:
https://lists.dulug.duke.edu/pipermail/fedora-triage-list/
These messages should hopefully tell you what its all about in more
detail:

cpuspeed proposal
by Warren Togami
I talked a bit about this with notting, here is the idea:
1) kudzu should detect the CPU and configure /etc/modprobe.conf
2) Arbitrary alias named "cpufreq_driver" will be used for this.
3) cpuspeed will load that driver. If loading fails display "Loading
$CPUFREQ_DRIVERNAME driver failed." If modprobe.conf does not have it
defined then display "Cpufreq driver not configured."
4) Either way display [OK] rather than [FAILED] to not alarm the users
where cpufreq is not available.
Good?

RH9 -> FC1 XDMCP problem in gdm
by Warren Togami
Jan 27 11:07:45 ltsp-server gdm[2995]: Maximum number of open XDMCP
sessions reached
After upgrading K12LTSP from RH9 to FC1, this is happening every once in
a while. When this happens, thin clients are no longer able to get
desktop sessions. init 3 && init 5 will recover from this, but it kills
all stations that are active.
ps -ef |grep gdm-binary or gnome-session does not show an abnormally
large number of processes.
Are there any known gdm bug introduced in FC1 related to this?

Oops on system startup
by Mickey Hill
I get the following oops on system startup.
HP Compaq d220 MT, Pentium 4 2.66
kernel-2.6.1-1.57
All packages current from rawhide (except a few with dependency
problems).
rhgb stops at "Checking for new hardware".
Starts and runs fine with kernel-2.4.22-1.2149.nptl.
I've tried disabling the parallel port, USB, etc. Still get oops.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Thanks.

FC development install feedback
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
Well, I just installed today's FC development on a new Dell Inspiron 8600
laptop. Here are a few issues I've encountered :
- firstboot can't run, unable to load rootpassword python module (*)
- vim can't run, unable to load libperl.so (/bin/vi does work)
- I get plenty of weird messages on the first VT (selinux?)
- starting the cpuspeed service fails : scaling_governor in /sys not found
- login through gdm fails, SELinux context failed
Now I've got lots of funky stuff to solve with my video card (very recent
ATI) and find how to disable SELinux for now :-)

Installation tree not matching boot media
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I'm trying to install FC development on a new laptop. I burned the boot.iso
image to a CD-R and tried to use it, but I get the good old annoying "The
Fedora Core installation tree in the directory does not seem to match your
boot media" message.
Is there a way to get the installation working nevertheless or am I
completely stuck needing to install FC1 and upgrade from there? Looking
around the VTs, I can't find any message explaining the reason for the
mismatch nor what exactly is checked to report it.

LVM1 to LVM2 plans for FC2
by Paul Jakma
Hi,
I'm just curious, what are the plans for how upgrading to FC2 will
work for boxes with existing LVM1 volumes?
regards,

Quick vim fix
by Peter Backlund
Hi.
the spec.vim syntax highlighting file is missing "exclude" in the
specFilesArea section, so that %exclude isn`t highlighted. Could that be
added? Lines 92 and 94.
