upgrading RH 9 system->Fedora with iso files and apt only
by Didier Casse
I have the yarrow's iso files on my HD in a RH9 system. Let's say I want
to upgrade selected packages using an "apt-get install" pointing to my
iso-mounted files, how do I do it?
i.e I mount the iso into some /mnt/yarrow1, /mnt/yarrow 2 etc..
Then what is the complete procedure to make my apt look into my own HD to
upgrade packages. Can anybody redirect me to the correct
resource or some literature hanging on the web? Thanks.
Assume also that I do not wish to burn CDs! I do not want to use
apt-cdrom. Thanks.
With kind regards,
Didier.

how to speed up mock?
by Farkas Levente
hi,
we use mock for local package build, but it's very slow. now we install
a new host just for mock with 8core, ram disks etc. it seems it still
slow. first of all most of the time mock use only one 1 core of the cpu.
is there any way to speed up different part of the mock build process?
thanks in advance.
ps. anyway is there any better place to discuss it?

jack2
by Andy Shevchenko
Hello.
Nowadays the jack project has two branches - old jack (1) branch with
version 0.116.2 and new one called jack2 version 1.9.3.
I'd like to gather opinions and suggestions about applying new version for F13.
Please, share your thoughts!
Thank you.

Font rendering in F13
by Matthias Clasen
Hey,
early in the F13 cycle, we enabled the bytecode interpreter in our
freetype package, since the patents on that have expired last fall.
Unfortunately, it turned out that many free fonts don't actually benefit
from this, and actually look worse with the bci. The reason for that is
that without the bci, freetype uses its autohinter on all fonts, but
with the bci turned on, it only applies hints to fonts which have them,
and leaves other fonts alone.
Behdad investigated the situation, and we have a plan to fix this, but
doing it properly requires enhancements in multiple places (freetype,
fontconfig, pango), and will not be ready in time for F13.
Therefore, we decided to turn the bci off again until the necessary
changes are in place to use it only on fonts which benefit from it. This
change went into freetype-2.3.11-3.fc13.
If your fonts look subtly different tomorrow, this is why...

Purging the F13 orphans
by Jesse Keating
It's that time of the release cycle again, to purge the orphans before
we get to feature freeze. Any unblocked orphans will be purged by the
feature freeze. A list of unblocked orphans and the broken deps they
would cause is at the end of this email.
Taking ownership of an orphan on the devel collection will prevent them
from being blocked. Remember, it is OK to let software die. Don't view
this as a list of things that somebody should pick up if they have the
spare time. Things should only be revived if there are actual users in
need of the software.

sysconfig ifcfg-* support for running custom post-up scripts per interface?
by Pasi Kärkkäinen
Hello,
Has there been any plans to support running custom post-up scripts for each interface, after "ifup <interface>" ?
Debian allows you to specify:
iface eth0 inet static
..
post-up /etc/network/if-up.d/fw.start
I'm looking for something similar for rhel/fedora.
Any ideas?
Maybe something like POST_UP="/path/script" in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-int
Thanks!

Harmless KDE feature upgrades - yeah right
by Juha Tuomala
Ironically it happened again, just now when these FESCO threads
are still warm.
My desktop gui processes leak enough mem that I need to restart
couple times a week or system will run out of memory. Today
I started with updating the F11 with yum. During the update,
I noticed that it's pulling in the kde-4.4.0, scary. Then reboot.
Now when I logged in, noticed that desktop has really changed
quite a bit, some visual stuff even fixed.
Then I tried to start kmail to start working. It starts, asks
passwords, whines something about Akonadi which i don't use and
then crashes/exists.
kmail(4465)/kio (KIOConnection)
KIO::ConnectionServer::listenForRemote: Listening on "local:/tmp/ksocket-tuju/kmailRj4465.slave-socket"
kmail(4465)/libakonadi Akonadi::Control::Private::exec: Could not start/stop Akonadi!
kmail(4465) main: Unable to start Akonadi server, exit application
kmail(4465)/kdecore (KConfigSkeleton)
KCoreConfigSkeleton::writeConfig:
(gdb)
This is exactly kind off stuff I don't have time now to solve,
since I need to work. If such upgrade would have been put to
next coming release, I could have upgraded when I have time,
some weekend - it would not interrupted my working and ruin my
day.
For all those who say that "latest stuff is the reason why
I use Fedora!!!1", there is rawhide for you.
For a lot of people, this kind of breakage is exactly the reason not
to switch from windows/mac to Fedora.
Yes, I'm writing this with Alpine... handling pdf attachments and
doing invoicing with it is going to be fun.
KDE SIG, you need to re-think that proposal again.

should man-pages-* have Requires: man?
by Ivana Varekova
For now in fedora there are 11 packages which contains language
mutations of man-pages (man-pages-{cs,da,de,es,fr,it,ja,ko,pl,ru,uk})
and man-pages package.
Only 2 of them (man-pages-es, man-pages-it) requires man package. I
think man dependences should be consistent in all man-pages* packages.
From my point of view man dependency should be in all of them.
Any ideas?

spin kickstart/minimization cleanups
by Colin Walters
As you may or may not know I've been unhappy with how the Live image
path has diverged from the automated install path (standalone anaconda
+ @gnome-desktop) for the desktop.
Attached is a series of patches to both comps and spin-kickstarts
which has a a high level goal of moving the two closer.
Basically there are 3 fundamentally separate concepts which got intertwined:
* Bits necessary for running a Live OS (turning off cron, etc)
* Removing things we do want to fit into a CD
* Removing "traditional Unix workstation" or other stuff that @base
grew we don't want in @desktop regardless of space
The comps patches come first, then the spin-kickstart patches.
This isn't complete but I think it's a noticeable improvement. We
still have more comps gardening to do. Note the spin-kickstart
patches obsolete the second of the patch I sent earlier.

FWD: orphaning curlftpfs , mod_auth_shadow
by Kevin Fenzi
I'm forwarding this for David Anderson:
From: David Anderson <fedora-packaging(a)dw-perspective.org.uk>
To: fedora-devel-list(a)redhat.com
Subject: Orphaning curlftpfs , mod_auth_shadow
Date: Mon, 11 Jan 2010 11:22:25 +0000
User-Agent: KMail/1.12.4 (Linux/2.6.31.6-166.fc12.x86_64; KDE/4.3.4; x86_64; ;)
Greetings,
Due to a slow African Internet connection and ever-growing
responsibilities, I regret that I have to and am orphanning these two
packages:
curlftpfs - mount FTP filesystems via FUSE and curl
mod_auth_shadow - Apache authentication via /etc/shadow
There are a couple of open bugs for curlftpfs which I said I'd fix by
upgrading to the latest version, but it's so long since I used the
system and I'm battling with the accounts system, expired certificates.
Both these packages I originally packaged because I wanted to use them.
I'd have thought that they'd both have many users.
Many thanks,
David
