i thought CONFIG_REGPARMS is the problem not the 4K stacks....

w3m and vim segfaults (gpm related?)
by Derek Poon
I'm getting segfaults with w3m and vim when running them in the Linux text
console. As I'm speculating that the two crashes might be interrelated,
I'm going to describe both in the same e-mail.
I'm running on recent FC devel packages:
kernel-2.6.5-1.326
gpm-1.20.1-46
w3m-0.5-2
vim-common-6.2.457-1
vim-enhanced-6.2.457-1
In case it matters, here's my /etc/sysconfig/mouse:
FULLNAME="Generic - Wheel Mouse (USB)"
MOUSETYPE="imps2"
XEMU3="yes"
XMOUSETYPE="IMPS/2"
DEVICE=/dev/input/mice
========================================================================
ISSUE #1:
When running in the Linux text console, w3m crashes immediately after
rendering any webpage.
$ echo $TERM
linux
$ ldd /usr/bin/w3m
[...]
libgpm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgpm.so.1 (0x00521000)
libtermcap.so.2 => /lib/libtermcap.so.2 (0x0089f000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x0054f000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00537000)
$ rm -rf ~/.w3m
$ /usr/bin/w3m http://www.google.com/
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

#2 0x0804c797 in main (argc=2, argv=0xfeee8254, envp=0xfeee8260)
at main.c:1094
#3 [...]
For your information, GET(0) is just a macro in gpm's libcurses.c that
evaluates to getch(). Why should something as simple as getch()
segfault?
It works fine when w3m is running under gnome-terminal with TERM=xterm,
but crashes as described above if I run it in gnome-terminal and force
TERM=linux.
If the gpm daemon is not running, the /dev/gpmctl socket does not exist,
and the screen is littered with the following diagnostic messages. But
w3m crashes in exactly the same way whether or not gpm is running.
*** info [lib/liblow.c(326)]:
/dev/gpmctl: No such file or directory
*** err [lib/liblow.c(333)]:
/dev/gpmctl: No such file or directory
*** err [lib/liblow.c(377)]:
Oh, oh, it's an error! possibly I die!
It would be nice to get this resolved, since the whole point of w3m is
to quickly Google some stuff without firing up the X server =)
========================================================================
ISSUE #2:
Here's a crash in vim that is also somehow mouse related.
$ echo $TERM
linux
$ ldd /usr/bin/vim
[...]
libgpm.so.1 => /usr/lib/libgpm.so.1 (0x00521000)
[...]
$ /usr/bin/vim
Then, if you don't already have such a command in your ~/.vimrc, type
:set mouse=n
and then type any colon or slash command, such as
: or :w or :q
and watch vim explode--
Vim: Caught deadly signal SEGV
Vim: Finished.
Segmentation fault
It's certainly challenging trying to use vim without ever hitting the
colon or slash keys. Before I figured out the workaround of removing "set
mouse" from my .vimrc, I kept losing my work due to vi twitches like :w =)

Any ideas?

gcc34-ada?
by Laurent GUERBY
Hi,
Any reason (other than no time to package, not released yet anyway, or
no space left on ISO) not to include gcc34-ada in FC2? gcc34 is much
much better than 33 on the Ada side.

RFE: Desktop file cleanup
by Peter Backlund
Hi.
I'd like to see a decision being made about how the desktop file entries
Name and Comment are chosen. Right now, there are a number of different
styles:
- XChat has "IRC Client/XChat" == <short description>/<application name>
- Epiphany has "Web Browser/Browse the web" == <short desc.>/<long
descr.>
- Evolution has "Evolution Email/Send email and manage your schedule" ==
<application name><short desc.>/<long desc>
- Rhythmbox has "Rhythmbox/Play and manage your music collection" ==
<application name>/<long desc.>
My proposal is that the style represented by the Evolution example is
made standard, and that all applications are adapted to this style. This
will enhance usability and consistency. Very generic applications, such
as gnome-calculator can instead use <short desc>/<long desc> only. The
examples above would then look like:
- "XChat IRC Client/Chat on IRC network"
- "Epiphany Web Browser/Browse the web"
- "Rhythmbox Music Player/Play and manage your music collection"
Also, the long description should be a description about what the
program is used for, not as in the case of Mozilla Firefox: "lightweight
browser based on mozilla".

Problems with latest updates. Kernel + X.
by Naoki
fyi..
1) Kernel, the nvidia module doesn't compile against .326.
2) X error ( not fatal )
Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.
X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
[host]$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc105", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc105", "us", "", ""
[host]$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

3) Kernel panic ( maybe with APCI only systems ).

compiling 2.4.x kernel on FC2
by Alex Fielding
I'm trying to compile a 2.4.22 kernel on the Fedora Core test 2 distribution (1.91). I find that the normal sequence of steps that work perfectly fine on the same machine under Fedora Core 1 cause various kernel panics during boot. Has anyone tried compiling a 2.4.x kernel under FC2, is there anything different that needs to be done?

new fedora.us apt bug
by Gary Peck
i'm not sure if this is the right list for this, but i just upgraded to
the latest apt version from fedora.us (apt-0.5.15cnc6-0.fdr.11.1.91).
when i run the mirror-select command and select "Indiana University,
Bloomington Indiana, USA" for the Fedora Extras repository, the URL that
is written to mirror-select.list is wrong. what's written is:
rpm http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/fedora/fedora fedora/1.91/i386 stable
whereas the correct address is:
rpm http://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/linux/fedora.us/fedora fedora/1.91/i386 stable
(note the "fedora.us" vs. "fedora")
otherwise, the new version has been working great!

FC2 -- support for monolithic kernel?
by Niki Waibel
i'd like to hear some comments of you regarding a monolithic kernel without modules.
i like to use fedora for firewalls/gateways. for such a system i always strip the
minimum system by all possible rpm's. in addition i always build a static kernel
with a minimum set of features.
it has been always the case (FC2T2, FC1, RH9, RH8, RH73, ...) that changes in
/etc/rc.sysinit
has been necessary to get the system up cleanly. right now (FC1, FC2T2) there is
a problem in the acpi section. (modules are loaded even if you pass the ``nomodules''
kernel option).
i am wondering if you want this to be fixed, or if you plan fedora being a system
only running its own supported (modularized) kernel.
