cvs
by seth vidal
Hi,
A few weeks back someone posted some scripts to make a cvs repo of
mostly-current stuff from rawhide. Could you re-point me at those
scripts. I'd like to do some tests to try and do this - to see how much
space it eats up, etc.
Just curious about it. Thanks.

self-introduction: Aaron Bennett
by Aaron Bennett
Hello,
I've been reading this list for a while, and I've made a few useful
packages which I'd like to see included in Fedora.
Here's the self-introduction as required by the Fedora submission policy:
1. Full Name: Aaron Bennett
2. Needham, MA
3. Unix Administrator
4. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering
5. Goals in the Fedora Project:
I'm responsible for creating the Fedora install which goes on all of our
student's laptops. Our students all dual-boot Windows and, currently,
Red Hat 9. As part of this effort, I've been working on optimizing
Fedora for laptop usage by generating various rpms, which I'd like to
get into Fedora. As I continue this work, I'd like to see Fedora grow
and get better. After all, if I do something here which makes 150
students lives better, that's one thing. If at the same time it can get
back upstream to Fedora it will have so much more impact.
For a start, I'll be submitting srpms for waproamd & ifplugd.
6. Historical Qualifications:
For my resume, please see
http://www.systemspoet.com/~abennett/bennett,aaron.html
I'm an experienced Linux user, Systems Administrator, and developer. I
used to work for Genuity in the web hosting engineering department where
we basically created a "distribution" of Solaris customized for web
hosting. I know perl, shell scripting, and a little python. You should
trust me because I can recite the prologue to the Canterbury Tales in
Middle English as well as substantial chunks of Office Space.

X11 dependencies
by Charles Lopes
When xorg-x11 replaced XFree86 it was my understanding that FC2 was
going to be made X11 implementation agnostic. By looking at the current
dependencies in rawhide, a few packages still need either XFree86-libs
(libgnomeui) or XFree86-devel (gtk2-devel, gtk+-devel, imlib-devel,
SDL-devel, qt-devel, pango-devel, startup-notification-devel, tk-devel).
In the future, it may become desirable to replace all or part of
xorg-x11 packages by alternate packages like the standalone libraries,
kdrive or Xizzle. If so it might also be a good idea not to introduce
dependencies on the names xorg-x11, xorg-x11-libs.
I would like to suggest that dependencies on -libs be dropped. Please
correct me if I'm wrong but they don't seem to be serving any purpose.
(Ok, I found a few cases where the indirect dependency is useful. For
example, xorg-x11-Xvfb -> xorg-x11 -> xorg-x11-libs ->
xorg-x11-libs-data. But that's a bit long way to make sure that Xvfb
finds rgb.txt.)
xorg-x11-xfs already provides xfs, xorg-x11-twm twm and so on. Something
similar could be done for xorg-x11 ("x11", "x", "xserver") or
xorg-x11-libs-data (x11-libs-data for example; Xvnc, Xvfb could then
require it)
xorg-x11 requires xorg-x11-base-fonts. That could be changed to just
"base-fonts". (If not already done ;-) )
Well you get the idea. So do you have any plans to introduce this type
of changes? Is it worth to look into it and offer a more complete
suggestion?

sg (scsi generic) again
by Jurgen Botz
So at one point it was dropped because "deprecated", now it's
back in, but in 2.6.5-1.327 at least it seems to be broken...
The module loads without complaining, but it doesn't seem to
do anything; no message in 'dmesg', trying to access it gives
"Error trying to open /dev/sg0 exclusively (No such device or address)."
That error was from "grip", "cdrecord -scanbus" also doesn't
find anything.

FC1 on HP Proliant ML310 + RAID CMD Technology Inc PCI0649
by Dario Lesca
Hi, is the RAID controler CMD Technology Inc PCI0649 supported by FC1?
I have 2 disk IDE ATA 100 and I have configured then into raid controler
as RAID 0 (mirror). But if I boot whit CD-1 for install FC1, disk druid
see 2 disk and not 1 ...
How can I install FC1 on this server?
I must use a specific driver from third part?
I have also tried boot from FC2-T3 but nothing is changed.
Many Thanks.

Problems with SCSI/sg.ko & USB/(uhci_hcd.ko + usb_storage.ko)
by Casimiro de Almeida Barreto
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
Again, an old nasty problem is back in FC2 test 3: using the latest
linux-2.6.5-1.327, when I attach an IOMEGA ZIP CD (USB) (RW) unity to
USB port, usb_storage recons it and registers correcty (both at /sys
and /proc/...), device /dev/scd0 is active (I can mount, umount and
read CDs) and I got a message indicating that it was registered as sr0
(althought I cannot have access do /dev/sr0). But the device is not
reconned by sg.ko (is is not registered).
The first consequence of this behaviour is that I cannot record
anything using the unity.
I tried almost everything: starting the system with de drive attached,
changing the module loading order (this worked in old RH8.0), etc...
Have anybody had the same probem?
Best regards,
Casimiro

DVD download problem
by John Hearns
Hope this is not too far off-topic.
I've failed to downlaod the DVD iso twice, using Firefox.
Once from Duke when I didn't leave enough room in /tmp (argh)
and cnlab-switch.ch timed out las night.
I've tried wget several times to the cnlab-switch ftp site.
Even with --ignore-length (appropriate for http I know)
it is fetching a 84,785,152 byte long file.
Ideas please?

Update on problems creating iteraid driver disk
by Paul Gear
Hi folks,
A while back i posted about trying to create iteraid driver disks for
FC1. With the help of David Kewley's instructions
(http://www.klab.caltech.edu/~kewley/driverdisk/dd.html) on using Doug
Ledford's driver kit (http://people.redhat.com/dledford/), i managed to
create a proper driver disk.
However, the bad news is that it still doesn't work. When the driver is
inserted, it complains about versioned module symbols (i think in the
scsi_mod driver) being missing.
My question is: what is the method for controlling the presence or
absence of module symbol versioning in the boot kernel? It seems to be
different to that used in the normal kernel, because i can boot from a
non-RAID drive and insmod the driver just fine.
Alternatively, am i missing something else? Perhaps the need to compile
my own version of scsi_mod and include it in the driver disk?
If anyone could point me to some relevant documentation on this, i would
be grateful. Googling for the appropriate keywords has proved to be
futile - a needle & haystack job.
