UTF-8 & imap folder name handling
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi,
The Fedora Linux project and Red Hat are pushing very hard for good
internationalisation support. That means UTF-8 support in every single
app they ship even if it may cause interoperability problems with old
applications (the common feeling is if we wait for everyone to jump on
the unicode boat before using unicode, we'll still be waiting in ten
years).
Squirrelmail by default does not use UTF-8 for many of its locales,
causing character losses when you reply to a message that contains
characters not available in the encoding declared for your locale.
To workaround this all the locales in the fedora squirrelmail version
are converted to UTF-8 at build time (cf attached build script). This
fixes interoperability between locales, since all characters in a
received message now fit inside the locale encoding, so quoting people
when replying to them now work.
Unfortunately this fix has unearthed a problem with squirrelmail
handling of imap folders. squirrelmail seems to assume 7bit imap folder
names, as soon as you try do display a folder name that use >7bit
characters in an UTF-8 locale things break (it doesn't with 8bit iso
locales, probably because so many bits assume iso-8859-1 transcoding
problems cancel one another).
With an UTF-8 locale SM won't display properly non-ascii folder names
when those have been created by another mail client, if you
recreate/rename the folders in squirrelmail display is now fine inside
SM but broken for everyone else.
Many common default folders use >7bit encodings in many locales (Sent ->
"Éléments envoyés" in French) so you're almost certain to hit this bug
as soon as you use an UTF-8 locale that actually needs >7bit for naming
folders. It's not a problem that can be ignored if one wants to ship and
i18n SM.
Can someone familiar with squirrelmail fix the imap folder encoding code
when local is UTF-8-enabled ? This is a bit too much to do at the Fedora
level (especially since Fedora tries to stay close to upstream). If not
Fedora will have to accept SM won't do UTF-8 sanely any time soon, which
will mean SM removal according to Fedora internal rules.

initrd stage: CAP_SYS_RAWIO on /dev/iscsictl fails . help
by Aggarwal, VikasX
Subject : Is CAP_SYS_RAWIO not permitted during the initrd stage in
kernel 2.6.9-22 ? It was permitted in 2.4.20 kernel.
Installing and booting from iSCSI disk (worked in
2.4.20 , fails in 2.6.9-22 kernel).
Hi,
I am in the initrd stage of boot . Kernel 2.6.9-22 , Red Hat
enterprise linux.
During post-install stage and before the first boot , I modified the
initrd to have my iscsi driver and related daemon in initrd.
The installation was made successfully to an iSCSI disk. Now need to
boot through it.
During the initrd stage in first-time-boot , my daemon gets the iSCSI
device name from the remote storage server.
" now it wants to pass that information to iscsi-sfnet.ko via IOCTL"
, the ioctl call returns error (-1) which is EPERM, the perror
says-Inappropriate IOCTL". Why that error return from sys_ioctl ?
Is CAP_SYS_RAWIO or some other capability not permitted during the
initrd stage in kernel 2.6.9-22?
I have used the same thing in 2.4.20 kernel . works great. I can
install and also boot from the remote iSCSI disk with my modified
initrd in 2.4.20 kernels.
Are the new security features of 2.6 kernel ( security/seclvl.c)
hindering this IOCTL operation during initrd stage?
What is the solution to my problem. Is there a boot-time parameter ?
Please advice .
thanks
-Vikas

Here it hangs in "Enabling swap" (get rid of the rhgb argument to see what
goes on). Has done so for anything after 1621 here.
I filed it to bugzilla, but it is gone now?

Supporting third party software in /usr/local
by Mike Hearn
Hi,
Every so often people pop up and give us (the autopackage team) flak for
using a default install path of /usr instead of /usr/local.
The reasoning is that as RPM and friends don't check to see if the
software they're installing already exists on the filesystem, it's
possible for a user to install some program (say Inkscape, or AbiWord)
from the upstream autopackage and then install an RPM over the top by
accident, for instance by doing a group install, or if the application is
resolved as part of some other dependency (deps on applications are
bizarre in my mind, but they do happen ...)
This set of problems could be traded for an entirely different set (on
Fedora at least) if /usr/local was fully supported. Currently there are
lots of ways in which software installed here is a second class citizen.
These problems affect source code installs too as most configure scripts
default to /usr/local.
Here are a few I noticed a while back - apologies if these have changed in
rawhide or if I am misremembering:
* /etc/ld.so.conf doesn't include /usr/local/lib
* /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu doesn't merge
/usr/local/share/applications [bug #117671]
* $XDG_DATA_DIRS doesn't include /usr/local/share
* $BONOBO_ACTIVATION_PATH doesn't include /usr/local/lib/bonobo/servers
* $KDEDIRS doesn't include /usr/local
* $PKG_CONFIG_PATH doesn't include /usr/lib/pkgconfig
* DBUS configuration file does not <includedir> /usr/local/etc/dbus-1/system.d
* fontconfig doesn't have a <dir> element for /usr/local/share/fonts
* Actually I'm not even sure regular $PATH includes /usr/local/bin, but
maybe that was some other distro ...
And at least one weird oddity:
* Info looks in /usr/share/info and /usr/local/info. Is it top level or
not?
I think there are some more I missed.
I filed a bug for the menu entries long ago as this is the most visible
thing that breaks when we install out of /usr but I guess for obvious
reasons I didn't bother filing bugs for all of them. There are just too
many and there's bound to be some I forget or miss out.
As this is a policy issue that touches many packages, I think maybe a
better solution would be for the owner of each package to take a 2-minute
break and think "Does my package have a $FOO_DIR or <include>foo</include>
type configuration option? If so, should it include /usr/local?" and then
just go in and fix it. The issues are normally with config files, startup
scripts and so on anyway.
I know I shouldn't really make requests without patches, but in most cases
it'd be faster for the relevant maintainer to just add the line themselves
than read a patch then apply it.
Does anybody have any objections to doing this? If not, what is the best
thing for me to do - file a single bug and just CC the maintainers of any
affected packages I can think of?
thanks -mike

hsqldb ate uid 500

When I installed fc5-devel on my x86_64, hsqldb %post created an

which screwed up my NFS mounts as "wriede" is 500 on all my other

Some i386 devel packages installed on x86_64 by mistake
by Willem Riede
I found out the hard way (rpms not building correctly) that when I installed
fc5-devel on my x86_64 system the following three packages were installed only
in i386 architecture though x86_64 versions exist:
ncurses-devel-5.4-19
pam-devel-0.80-10
zlib-devel-1.2.3-1
After installing their x86_64 counterpart and removing the i386 version all is
well (on that front at least).
Do I need to bugzilla this and if so, against which component?

Loading custom DSDT
by Richard Hughes
What is the fedora "recommended" way of installing a new ACPI DSDT? Can
we make the process of loading a new asl file easier for users in FC5?
There are lots of broken BIOS's out there that require custom dsdt's, as
I've found when debugging power management stuff.
Thanks for any help, as I'm not sure what to advise people running
Fedora.

FC4: SCSI tape not detect
by Dario Lesca
Hi, After kernel update (2.6.13-1.1526_FC4smp) the SCSI tape driver not
work, is missing.
If I rebuild with a previous kernel (2.6.12-1.1447_FC4smp) the tape work
property.
The server is a HP Proliant ML 350 with 2 SCSI controller
- smartarray controller (with RAID 5)
- LSI controller (with TAPE C7438A HP Model) .
See the attach, is a previous message with two boot process, post to
fedora user list.
I must also fill a bug report on bugzilla?
Many thanks for your reply and sorry for my bad English
