Pungi: how to set priority for repos ?
by Vnpenguin
Hi,
I would like setup my local repo for pungi, but I don't know how to
define priority for this repo in order to get my rpms instead of rpms
from standard repos.
For this moment, I have to play with "Epoch", but I think priority
solution will be better, right ?
Thanks,

pm-utils for F8 and Advanced power management
by Paulo Cavalcanti
I am trying to fix the Load_Cycle_Count
bug that is increasing at a very fast pace each day
on my laptop running F8. Suddenly, I realized that apparently the
version of pm-utils for F9 has a kook to deal with it:
99hd-apm-restore.hook and
/etc/pm-utils-hd-apm-restore.conf
Why was not this ported to F8?
The problem, as I understand, is quiet serious,
and can kill the drive in one or two years.
F8 is still maintained, right?

Kickstart partitioning stanzas - make optional?
by Martin Langhoff
When anaconda sees partitioning configuration stanzas in the kickstart
file, it takes them on unconditionally. Is there a way to give the
user a chance to override them during installation?
A search over the kickstart doco does not show any useful hints, and
the GUI kickstart configurator doesn't offer any options that seem
suitable. Perhaps there is a smart way to do this that I'm not aware
of? How do liveCDs say "ah, if you let me, I'll autopartition it like
this *whack!*, but if you want to do it yourself, here, have at parted
my friend"?
cheers,
martin

Strange mock behaviour - buildrequires in the host?
by Martin Langhoff
Hi,
while building some packages for the OLPC XS I am seeing some odd
behaviour from Mock. I am not certain whether this is expected...
1 - The F9 host had httpd installed (unbeknownst to me)
2 - The install script in the package was (wrongly) trying to do
install -o apache /file - which errored out "no such user"
3 - Adding a BuildRequires to the spec file fixed the problem - mock
installed httpd in the chroot - however, install would still fail as
it was not running as root.
4 - I spotted httpd on the host and removed it. I can no longer build
the package - "httpd is needed by ds-backup-x-y-z..."
There are 2 weird things in here for me:
- In step 4 - the host environment not having httpd should not affect
the build chroot.
- In step 3, I was expecting the rpmbuild running the "install" target
inside mock to be using fakeroot or something similar.
Apologies in advance if these questions are basic - a review of the
Mock wiki and man pages did not help, and my rpm packaging skills have
last been used in late 2000.
cheers,
m

Please do. I think it's especially important to support Fedora 8, because
people who use Xen domain0 _cannot_ upgrade to Fedora 9.

Retiring compat-guile-16
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hello there,
None of my packages is using compat-guile-16.
Guile 1.8 is now widely used, instead of guile 1.6.
Thus I'm retiring compat-guile-16 on rawhide, next week. Any objections ?
Kind Regards,
Chitlesh

Fedora, meet OLPC. OLPC, meet Fedora.
by Greg DeKoenigsberg
Did you know that the OLPC project is the largest single "customer" of
Fedora in the entire world?
The rumours of OLPC's death have been greatly exaggerated. Despite some
unfortunate statements by the project's erstwhile CEO, the OLPC project is
still *extremely* focused on succeeding in its noble goal -- the education
of the world's children -- with the use of free software as the central
component of their software strategy. And they are, in fact, succeeding,
even though the open source community has largely turned its collective
back on that success. Which is, I think, a shame.
Let me share some numbers with you. They might surprise you. I know they
surprised me when I heard them a few weeks ago at FUDCon.
OLPC has shipped over 300,000 units to kids around the world. They plan to
ship at least another 50,000 more each month, and very likely more than
that. It's entirely possible that by the end of 2008, there will be a
million OLPC systems deployed worldwide.
Of those systems, 100% of them currently run Fedora, and 0% of them
currently run Windows -- despite the press clippings you may have read.
The OLPC project is based on Fedora. The engineers at OLPC have invested
thousands of person-hours in making Fedora a successful base for OLPC
deployments. Fedora is now, and will continue to be, the base operating
system for the OLPC project. Period.
It's time for the Fedora community to step up and represent.
* * *
There will be many opportunities for members of the Fedora community and
the OLPC communities to help one another in the coming months. I intend to
spend most of my time identifying those opportunities and helping to
making them happen.
The first opportunities are for the Fedora packagers. This work can be
done right now, today.
Understandably, the OLPC folks want to focus their efforts on the
challenges that are unique to the OLPC project. Which means that they
should be shedding all work that can more easily be handled by others.
Package maintenance is a perfect example of this kind of work.
Here is a list of packages that are either badly needed by OLPC:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/WishList#OLPC_Wishlist
These packages are either unavailable in Fedora, or are currently being
maintained, poorly, by overworked OLPC engineers who can't invest enough
time to do them justice. There are lots of simple issues that even novice
packagers could handle. Missing or broken dependencies. Creation of
dead-simple activity packages. And so on.
If there's one thing that Fedora community engineers do exceptionally
well, it's package maintenance. If every current Fedora packager
volunteered to own *one single package* that is crucial to OLPC, we would
immediately free the core OLPC team for much more strategic work. It's a
big, immediate win, and the entire OLPC team will be delighted to receive
your help.
Fedora packagers: please consider adopting one of these packages and
giving it a loving home. I will keep asking. :)
