We could enable it everywhere but we've not reached out to desktop editions for comments.

Sure, but it's simple enough that I wouldn't worry about that. There's also the fact that outside of the GNOME and KDE variants, nobody has a graphical firmware update management tool. So what are they supposed to do or use?
Would these messages show up, for example, if they opened the terminal app?
