I can't seem to set WPA-PSK in nm-applet like I can in knetworkmanager.
And believe me, I looked. Hard.
For a while, I thought NetworkManager couldn't do WPA-PSK at all, but I
found it easily in knetworkmanager. And since the current setup (Fedora
8) doesn't have it yet, I'd consider this a big big problem...

I have no problems connecting to a AP with running WPA-PSK using F8. It
automatically detected the encryption and asked for a passphrase (which
it then automagically stored in gnome-keyring).

Was your access point configured to only allow this option? Sounds like the OP
is wanting to FORCE the use of WPA-PSK (i.e. access point will allow it), not
just have NM make the choice automatically. The access point may be setup to
allow several security options.

Yes, I have to force it, because up until today the system was using

network was acting horribly flaky, and I managed to track it to the WEP
key itself (when I removed the security, everything worked fine). So I
switched the access point to use WPA-PSK, as a better option than
leaving it wide open. But NetworkManager was still insisting it used
WEP, so I was trying to force it to switch. nm-applet allows manually
selecting WEP and a few other options, but not WPA-PSK with a specific
encryption cipher.

I did exactly what you did too - i.e. switched an AP from WEP to
WPA-PSK. Because NM had previously associated with the AP with WEP, it
considers the AP with WPA-PSK as a different AP, and so there is a
second entry in the list of wireless networks corresponding to the
same AP. I guess there is no logic in NM currently to cope with an AP
changing security settings.

new/different encryption scheme and offer to let you enter it. You
shouldn't have to force it. If this is not happening, file a bug.

Jesse's only partially right, actually... He's talking about WEP auth
modes, which cannot be distinguished. With WPA though, the AP
broadcasts and Information Element telling what capabilities it supports
(thankfully somebody had a clue). So we can tell between WEP and
not-WEP [1].
When connecting to an AP that's changed properties, the APs current
properties should override the properties of the stored connection
details. If they don't, it's a bug. But it's also true that changing
the capabilities on the fly isn't as well tested as connecting to them
in the first place, mainly because people connect to APs much more often
than they switch their APs settings. So I call bug.

[1] though we cannot tell when Enterprise class APs support _both_ WEP
and WPA at the same time, but the user only wants to use WEP or only has
a WEP-capable card. Some APs only broadcast the WPA-TKIP capability but
accept WEP connections as well as a backwards compat measure.

The workaround is to select "connect to different wireless network" in
the applet-menu. Then type in the network SSID, and pick the right
encryption.
Not as smart as if NetworkManager detected the encryption switch on
its own, of course, but not a horrible workaround either.

Yes, that's really annoying. Every three months when I change WPA-PSK
password on my AP, I have to dive into gconf and remove my network from
it. If I don'tn NM never asks for new password.

F7 or F8? There's some known bugs with 0.6.x that cause it never to ask
for a new password when a WEP key changes, probably the same thing for
WPA too.

It should recognize the change and it will kill your current connection,
because you just wiped it out.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to provide this type of NM full state reset from the
applet itself? To the casual user the only thing visible IS the applet, and
when its not working the applet should provide a possible answer.

I would rather be able to delete specific networks from nm-applet, as
knetworkmanager has. A handy dandy 'clear all' button in that same
dialog would be helpful too. I know the NM people have been throwing
around a few ideas though.
