Let the naming begin! We're starting very early this time around in the name game for F10. So, let the suggestions flow!
Remember the rules:
1) <NewName> must have some link to Sulphur
More specifically, the link should be Sulphur is a <blank> and <NewName> is a <blank> Where <blank> is the same for both
2) The link between <NewName> and Sulphur cannot be the same as between Werewolf and Sulphur. That link was "things that react badly with silver".
I will be collecting suggestions for 1 week, so the cutoff for names is:
May 29, 2008
Suggestions will be run through the legal queue and an election will happen for Fedora contributors to pick the next Fedora name.

OCHRE
(the connection is that both are yellow)
Also, I quite like the word :-) And it doesn't seem to have any significant use amongst the Linux community, at least as far as I can tell from Google ...

OCHRE
Ochre is more orangish/red IIRC.
But lemon is yellow. Sulphur -> Lemon

So why not simply Brimstone?

Normally, actual evolution of the name would probably be preferred to synonyms, but Brimstone is a super-cool name :)

I know this deosn't follow the direct form but Coliadinae. The name for a subfamily of butterflies also know as the sulfer butterflys. I imagine we could have beautiful themes to go allow with that.

The sunflower is generally a symbol used for any green political party or green economic plan. Perhaps we can include a daily tips piece to go along with any Infrastructure site that dispenses energy saving tips that can be used around the world. The potential for education here is really good.

OK, so I shamelessly jump in with some pimping: there are some graphic concepts drafted for a F10 theme proposal based on a steampunk concept and titled "Gears": http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/F10Themes/Gears
I wonder if someone can come with a name that can fit both the "Gears" theme and the naming scheme (linked somehow with Sulphur).

On a separate note, a previous poster's suggestion of Ultraviolet, and the abbreviation of 'UV' made me wonder if there could be some sort of roman numeral pun that would get us to 'these go to 11', and also play off the Fruity Operating System roman numeral fetish.
It would have to be awfully clever to hit all those targets and still associate with Sulphur.
I'm just haven't thought of one yet...

It's like walking into a store that is currently undergoing renovations for expansion but are still open for business. It's striking the balance between staying inviting and but keeping the construction moving.
Remember the movie Brazil?
Remember the computers? - very steampunk-y
Remember the logo for the movie? neon.
But does Brazil go to 11?
How about like this:
"Neon" is a memorable image from the movie Brazil; "Ours go to 11" is a memorable image from the movie Spinal Tap.
Although "ducts" is the most memorable image from Brazil. Don't quite see how to get from "sulpher" to "duct", though...

I used to *love* that movie ... until I started living it. Now I can't watch it : ]
Anyways ...
From Wikipedia:
The distinctive colors of Jupiter's volcanic moon, Io, are from various forms of molten, solid and gaseous sulfur.
So maybe the Jupiter moon connection wasn't so bad ... but the name of a moon ... "Io" instead ... kind of looks like "10" :]
Kind of stretching the association but: Sulphur is yellow and stinks like rotten eggs Io is yellow and stinks like rotten eggs :]
I do like the "Neon" suggestion a lot though. Lots of graphical potential: http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/everything-neon_2002_124397355

Furthermore, 10 is how you write 16 in hex...

We've been screwing around with trying to get some sort of content channel up so we can dog food our own multimedia stuff for what seems like forever. It's a real chicken and egg problem, but with miro for distribution and cheese, pitivi and istanbul for basic video creation and editting we have enough right now to start dogfooding things and generating a content channel. I don't care how crappy that initial content is. I fully expect Board members to be guinea pigs in terms of generating consumable content if we get a miro channel going, at least until people with more skill inside our community take the pludge.

there has to be a way to do it with gst based pipelines. And I'd rather use that way...because its out-of-the-box compatible. Having to reach for mencoder or ffmpeg for dealing with formats we can actually support out of the box...is "the lose."

Trademarks are enforced with industry and uniqueness in mind. I would hope that cars and operating systems are unrelated enough markets to not be a problem. Its also not particularly unique, being the name of an element. But then IANAL.

Hey, I didn't say that was going to be my only contribution to the name process! :-D I do think we really, REALLY need to find something that can link to some form of "Goes To." If someone could link Sulphur with Spinal Tap or a heavy metal cliche, that would work. Or if they can get us to a link from Sulphur to the title of a New Wave punk/rock album, that would work too. (XTC had "Go 2" in 1970-something -- 1977, maybe?)

Ok, no more plus 1'ing. They don't count at the moment. I collect all the valid names that aren't duplicates, they get run past legal, and then you can plus 1 until your fingers fall off.
Forgive me if I'm grumpy, but this thread will be huge as it is, and reading emails that are just plus 1's just adds to it.

Sulphur is an ingredient used to make chemicals. Element X is an ingredient used to make Powerpuff Girls.
Thus, we should have Fedora X 10. ;)
This does indeed fit the "... goes to 11" category too. I think we have a winner! ;o)

I'm fairly certain this would be denied due to the other operating system that calls itself "OSX".

When Sulphur is burning everyone notices. (smells badly) When Phosphor is burning, everyone notices. (you can't put out, burns under water, ingredient of greek fire)
Sulphur is lethal in some forms. (Sulphuric acid) Phosphor is lethal in some forms, killer in others. (greek fire vs phosphor acid in coke)

British variants of American noun spellings: spectre, camomile, draught, gaol, demagogue (marginal, demagog is rare in the US too), saltpetre (double points for both being components of gunpowder).
Towns in Clarke County, Indiana: Whiskey Run.
County seats in Oklahoma: Ada, Kingfisher.
Mountains in Alberta: Babel, Diadem, The Finger, Gong.
Finally, if we insist on using other element names, I propose the narrower class of "elements with many allotropes", in which case phosphorus is probably the next best candidate.
Ada and Saltpetre definitely fit with the steampunk art theme.

We already had a "Fisher" back in the day so I think we should avoid Kingfisher. But and Lovelace reference would be good.
Nitre would be even better (pun on nitrous oxide, which is used to make cars etc gp faster) as a precursor to black powder.
oke.. crazy suggestion
(Solar) Flare
Sulphur influence life (making it) a flare influence life (destroying it). Flare obseletes sulphur.
Also Fedora Flare sounds nice
And for Fedora 11 you can link Lightning to Flare. Flare is Fast, but lightning is Faster.
2008/5/23 Matej Cepl mcepl@redhat.com:
And I am sure mimho would create logos for that ;-).
Well, ... the possibilities are endless:
A bunch of (fluorescent coloured) straws. A doily. A difference engine (that would fit the steam punk theme which a number of people have mentioned elsewhere). A portrait of Ada. A portrait of Linda. ...
I like that steam punk thing. The "feersum enjinn" (spelling?) connection is good. I like Victorian themes (the whole sepia photography thing, plus early steps towards the "gentleman inventor" culture.
So ...
How about simply ...
Xenon.
- It's symbol is X (but it's not the name), which is the same as the release number. - It's an element. - It really promotes the "science lab" possibilities of Fedora. - We could be the *second* example of a Xenon-Sulfur bond (see http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/abstract.cgi/jacsat/1998/120/i31/abs/ja981032d.h... ...) - A mixture of Xenon and Sulfur was proposed for LAMPs (see http://members.misty.com/don/sulfbulb.html ...) - I'll stop now.

FWIW, Sulphur is an odorless substance & Water is an odorless substance. But I think Aqua/Agua/Dihydrogen Monoxide sounds better than water.
My wife suggested Ozone: Sulpheric acid is a component in air pollution; Ozone is a component in air pollution (particularly in cities).

It won't be strictly followed to Josh's notes about Fedora naming, but i'll take a try.
Fireworks or gun powder are being made from Sulphur. Sulphur is one of their ingredients. When we're launching fireworks, they're exploding.

To be a little pedantic, chemical -- the noun usage is defined in my dictionary as "A substance produced by or used in a chemical process". The adjective usage is defined as 1. "Of or pertaining to chemistry" 2. "Of or pertaining to the properties of chemicals".
Strictly speaking all elements are chemicals. Chemical compounds usually have multiple elements but a single element is still a chemical.

A little added twist here. I'd like to give the Fedora Board a chance at culling the list a little bit before sending on to Legal. There were a number of names that made it through the "is a" test and Legal that might not have been the best ideas for naming a release. Add to that the fact that Red Hat has used outside Legal to do the name clearance the last few times and that is a measurable cost both in time and money. The more names we ask to clear the more expensive and longer the delay will be before we have a set to vote upon. So I am asking the Fedora Board to review the list of names that Josh has collected and remove any they deem not acceptable as a Fedora release name before handing it to Legal.
(Note, I haven't yet directly talked to the board about this, so I'm just assuming that they'll be on... board... with this.)

This is the second or third time I have entirely missed the naming discussion.
Why?
Not all contributors slavishly read every word on fedora-devel-list.
Next time, PLEASE, a cross-project announcement is in order. Otherwise you disenfranchise every project that does not have f-devel-l as their primary project list.
Previously it was suggested that the people who make the distribution should be involved in the naming, that is why it is not on e.g. fedora-list. These days, I can't see how we can imagine making a distro without all of the other subprojects. Why should we name the distro without them?

So. Apologies. It wasn't intentional. If you'd like, I'll extend the deadline for another 4 days and you can forward the initial announcement to whatever lists you'd like. Just make sure the replies get to me so I can collect them.

Perhaps not. But perhaps the chance to participate in the naming of a distribution is a treat we gift upon those that do...
In the early days the naming was picked by those who were in the office late at night hacking crap together to make the release happen. Then it moved to something more where a few people would pick some names and then those would get voted on by members of fedora-maintainers-list. Then we allowed said maintainers to offer suggestions. Then we shut down fedora-maintainers-list and moved the suggestions to fedora-devel-list. The spirit is the same, those that are slogging along and putting up with the traffic and doing the necessary work are those who get some bonus in offering suggestions for the name of the next release. Actually voting on the names that have made it back through the board and Legal will be open to a far broader range of Fedora contributors.

I think you tread a fine line there.
Most contributors are on fedora-devel list or follow it some way. However, I can see how some on docs or art, who _are_ doing, wouldn't be. Hence my offer to extend it for 4 days so Karsten can forward the rules email to the contributing groups he thinks might not be following fedora-devel.

I totally agree here, the Docs team salve away right before release ensuring that (for instance) the release notes are correct and factual, and that we can produce some documentation so our users can use what we the maintainers do.
You could use the exact same rationale to say that the Artwork guys get a say too.
Package maintainers are only one (although large) component of any Fedora release.

Josh and all, thanks. Sorry for my original parade raining attitude; I'm as responsible as anyone for not making sure changes were written down enough to be fixed or repeated next time.
By now all of you (who have signed/agreed to the CLA) have received the email I sent. You can let me know if it is in the right spirit. When given the task by Josh to "make the list we send the announcement to", I realized there was no way I could make such a list and be fair. Thus, I picked the mark of those have agreed to the the CLA, as that is our general mark for "contributor."
Of course, they still have to be bold enough to come on this list and put forward their suggestion. :)

Remember the rules:
- <NewName> must have some link to Sulphur
More specifically, the link should be Sulphur is a <blank> and <NewName> is a <blank> Where <blank> is the same for both
- The link between <NewName> and Sulphur cannot be the same as between
Werewolf and Sulphur. That link was "things that react badly with silver".

In that case, I nominate "Tennessee Stud". The only problem left is to tie that to "Ours goes to..." for F11. :-)
