This update 'saved' my /etc/pam.d/gdm in /etc/pam.d/gdm.rpmsave, but failed to create a new /etc/pam.d/gdm. This made gdmgreeter very unhappy.
Copying it back appears to 'make it work again'.

Still in %post, %postun, %preun is registered/unregistered desktop_gnome_peripherals_keyboard_xkb.schemas.
BTW introducing new schema for register/unregister schema files. IMO new schema is to complicated and still not guarantee produce always correct schamas database. Current template looks:
%post export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source` gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule \ <list_of_package_schemas>

%postun if [ "$1" -eq 0 ]; then export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source` gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule \ <list_of_package_schemas> fi
In case not registering in previous release some packages some new schemas this still do not prevent fixing this kind bugs. Probably better will be regenerate each time schemas database. IMO better/simpler schema for registered/unregistered can look only like:
%post GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source` \ gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule \ /etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas >& /dev/null
%postun GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source` \ gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule \ /etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas >& /dev/null
Yes .. regenerate schemas database takes longer time but will guarantee schamas database correct content.

They are.
Still I'm confused as what you try to accomplish. If your %postun does not evaluate $1 properly, your old package's %postun script is executed last and reverts changes your new package needs.
The following page covers this,
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/ScriptletSnippets
and also suggests a work-around for package upgrades where you want to remove old schema files, which are obsolete.

So what are doing all not removed keys from this xml files ? Example from my /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%%gconf-tree-af.xml:

install upgrade uninstall
%pre $1 == 1 $1 == 2 -- %post $1 == 1 $1 == 2 -- %preun -- $1 == 1 $1 == 0 %postun -- $1 == 1 $1 == 0
If you want replace register/unregister subset schemas by reinstall all files you need hook only in %post and %postun .. *unconditionaly*. No matter is it first install, upgrade or uninstall.
BTW. I have small modification %post/%postun script template:
if [ -x %{_bindir}/gconftool-2 ]; then export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`%{_bindir}/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` rm -f $GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE/* %{_bindir}/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas >& /dev/null fi
It will allow remove all "Requires(post,postun): GConf", "Prereq: GConf" or Requires(post,postun): /usr/bin/gconftool-2 rules.

For the general case of making a Requires(post) optional you need to make sure that the package that you are making optional invokes its update program when it installs. For instance:
Use this when a package drops an XML file in %{_datadir}/mime/packages.
%post update-mime-database %{_datadir}/mime &> /dev/null || :
$ rpm -q --scripts shared-mime-info postinstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh): /usr/bin/update-mime-database /usr/share/mime &> /dev/null
For the specific case of gconf schemas, you don't gain much by making this optional. The program itself depends on GConf2 so you have to pull it in for the program whether or not the scriptlet depends on it. This in contrast to gtk-update-icon-cache for kde apps and update-mime-database where the program can run fine without installing gtk2 or shared-mime-info.

%postun is the wrong scriptlet to run this in. Once you get to %postun, the original schema file is no longer present. (For an upgrade, this has to be done in %pre (Because the upgrading package will overwrite the old schema), for a removal in %preun (Because there won't be an install at that point to trigger the %pre scriptlet))

Oops. I thought you had fixed this by using --makefile-uninstall-rule. My mistake. But you're going to have to try again to fix your scriptlet::
$ echo `gconftool-2 --get-default-source` xml:merged:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults
So your rm -f won't do what you think it will.
A few more iterations and we'll have reached the point where your scriptlet is as complex as the currently advocated method.
