I don't know much about this subject, but I saw this thread on ubuntu. I, as many others, have seen problems with beagle.
BTW, this ubuntu whiteboard is also very interesting. https://features.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/tracker-integration https://launchpad.net/products/tracker

There is a proposal to include Tracker by default: https://features.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/tracker-integration I think this would fix most of the performance problems people are having
In addition to minimal resource usage, Meta Tracker has some very appealing features over Beagle, such as RDF searches and very flexible metadata storage (arbitrary tags or other metadata can be attached to files).
The CVS version https://launchpad.net/products/tracker/trunk has evolved nicely since the last release.

Well Tracker is now in Fedora Extras. So end users can use both.
Pros: Written in C. Much faster index, searching and memory consumption Cons: Missing filters yet for email, IM and a lot of code churn.

Is that maybe in devel only? I don't see any tracker in FC6 extras: smart search tracker

there's one small problem with tracker, actually.
mikmod - in core obsoletes 'tracker'.
this is obviously an old obsolete but it does prevent you from installing tracker on fc6 machines.
run this: yum --exclude=mikmod install tracker
and it will install, however, it will be removed on the next yum update run w/mikmod.
maybe a bug against mikmod to clip that old obsolete?

The review here https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=214025 says that mikmod issue has been fixed in rawhide, so it probably just requires a push into updates now.

This has been fixed yesterday on FC-5, FC-6 and devel. (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=214112)

Tracker has been proposed[1] to be included into GNOME and has been rejected for various reasons. See the thread for full details, but Joe's reply[2] lists some good reasons to not include tracker at this time.

His main complaint seems to be that tracker hasn't had a lot of testing. Maybe Fedora can help in that respect by putting it in devel and getting the community using it.

There are also problems with the code quality, or lack thereof. It's dissected somewhere else in the thread.

If we're not going to let packages in based on code quality "standards" then we're going to be kicking out a lot packages I think.

What is going to be default generally has higher standards applied to them. There already is a lot of packages discouraged for their code quality. I know atleast phpbb and webmin were put up for review and left off in the middle when people pointed out their security history and need for constant vigilance.

There's a sharp distinction between: riddled with security holes and "code is not pretty enough"

Okay, the lead developer Jamie McCracken has kindly offered to answer questions regarding Tracker. So ask your questions and get the answer straight from the horses mouth.
