I gave kernel-smp-2.6.8-1.520 a test run on my desktop before putting it
on the server, and the kernel crashes on boot with an NFS error. I guess
that that won't be a problem on the server, as the server isn't an NFS
client. I'm not sure if it's the same bug which caused the 2.6.8.1 release.
BTW.... Is there any easy way to record the stack trace, etc from kernel
crashes? Or do you have to use pen & paper?

Qt 3.3.2 question
by Sydney Faria
Qt 3.3.2 designer has a tutorial that can be found by going to Assistant ->
Qt Designer Manual and then links such as 'Creating a Main Window
Application' where several references are made, in the adding options action
section, to designer_tabwidget.png in
/tools/designer/examples/colortool/images directory. I've been told that
these images have been renamed to something like qtabwidget.png but I do not
believe this explanation since I can only find these png files in
/usr/lib/qt-3.3/doc/html directory and I know these are for a different
tutorial - the one with the canon! Does anyone know where the png images
are for this tutorial?

SILC library inclusion?
by Warren Togami
http://www.silcnet.org
The upstream gaim developers have requested that we include the SILC
libraries in FC3. This would allow our gaim package to enable the final
missing protocol SILC. SILC is kind of like IRC, except using strong
encryption and authentication. The gaim developers have exhibited a
strong commitment to Fedora development and it would be great if we
could support their request.
Would it be possible to add this library to FC3?

UP kernel on smp box ... Why?
by Janina Sajka
Is there any reason to continue to download and install the up kernel
when smp is known to work well on a particular system?
I made some use of the up kernels when first building my dual Opteron
box, but they've just been dead weight and extra effort recently, and
I'm thinking of just ignoring them from now on. Am I wrong to do so?

SGI Altix working with Fedora Core Development
by Erik Jacobson
Just a quick note -
SGI Altix (ia64) is working ok with the current Fedora Core Development
bits. The installer works normally, and booting up the installed system
works as expected. My tests were centered on Altix 350 hardware for the
moment but I expect that it will work ok on other Altix models too.
Currently, for installation, you do need to specify the console device.
Ie, you could start the installer in a way similar to this:
elilo linux console=ttySG0
Thanks!

mkinitrd clue
by Steve G
Hi,
During the hurricane I was able to figure out part of what's wrong with mkinitrd.
The power kept going out so I couldn't let any one know.
I use this in grub.conf: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.7-1.515.build ro root=0803
The problem seems to be that the code that recognizes numeric device
representations changed. The function name_to_dev_t is responsible for taking the
numeric representation and turning it into a device number. As is, it returns a
0. The problem seems to be related to this define #if kernel_had_not_done_it
When that is defined, it swings in the code that converts the numeric
representation to a real device number. I tracked this down first by changing the
error messages to use strerror rather than reporting a numeric, meaningless,
error. I highly recommend reworking the error messages to either say "errno: %d"
or use strerror. (I though errror 6 during mount really was mount's bitmapped
error code instead of errno.)
I'm now stuck at the next problem which is the exec'ing of init. It is reporting
errno 14, illegal address.

I also had to boot our server back to the previous kernel, as the latest
FC2 kernel (2.6.7-1.494.2.2) made samba unusable. Connections could be
made, but throughput was so low and unreliable that many applications
were timing out, causing database corruption in our Library software.
I'm currently using 2.6.6-1.435.2.3 without any problems. The problems
were with a variety of Win XP, 98 clients.
