Minimal installation
by Carlos Rodrigues
Hi!
I've tried to do a minimal installation of FC3, only to find that it
really isn't that minimal... So, my suggestion is: would it be possible
to have a really minimal installation option? I was thinking something
like the base installation of the BSDs.

LZW and legal stuff
by Michael A. Peters
LZW patent is no longer valid, according to Unisys themselves.
What are the chances (I guess lawyers need to get involved etc.) of
using LZW packages with Fedora?
For example - giflib, lzw compression kit for libtiff, etc.
It does look like the version of gd that ships with Fedora Core has gif
functionallity added back into by the upstream developer, and Fedora
did not patch it out - is that just an oversight or are you comfortable
with lzw compression now that the Unisys patent has expired?
If there are no *other* legal issues, I think lzw compression kit for
libtiff would definitely be good, the new version of gimp apparently
has better support for raw images from various digital cameras, and lzw
compressed tiff is a good way to share tiff images between operating
systems at a small filesize (IE sending images to stock photo company)

2.6.10-1.737_FC3 kernel panic
by Dax Kelson
Note that I've created a bugzilla bug for this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=144905
Thought I'd toss it out here to see if anyone else is seeing the same
thing.
My kernel is not tainted.

kernel builds for ppc
by Ralf Ertzinger
Hi.
Before I go off and file a bug about it: is there a reason that no new kernel
builds for ppc have shown up for quite a while?

Problems with ldap authentication (gdm)
by Dimitrie O. Paun
It looks like there is (again?) an authentication problem with gdm.
Namely, when I'm trying to use LDAP authentication, both
local login on a regular console and slogin work like a charm,
but gdm fails with the error:
"cannot set your user group, you will not be able to log in, please contact your system administrator"
Now, this is what I get in /var/log/messages:
Jan 12 01:03:16 saturn gdm[2847]: Cannot set user group for bugger
Jan 12 01:03:53 saturn gdm[2847]: Cannot set user group for bugger
I've done my homework, but I can't seem to find anything useful.
Now, I did find a _very_ similar bug reported (strangely enough)
exactly one year ago:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2004-January/msg00726.html
but that didn't help much either.
Any hints would be much appreciated!

Wanted: A really easy to setup&use small network file server
by Kyrre Ness Sjobak
After having my strugles with LDAP/NFS/etc, i have seen a need - a need
for a really good "set'n'forget" Linux-based directory server, that
would allow authentification of users and mounting of homedirs.
Something that you could thrust the average person to setup, that would
be "insert cd, in anaconda chose LAN file server, install. Add users.
Connect clients. Have fun". A really no-fuzz kind of thing.
I know this is a short descriptions, i could probably gone to great
lengths about this, but i think you get the point. So i just throw out
the idea, hoping that somebody caches it...
Kyrre
Btw. i couldn't not notice that bluecurve window borders around the maps
on the control terminal of some new tsunami warning system... I am
really relieved they at least did get the OS choice right! Seriously!
Now i migth acctually thrust it...
