gnome-utils depends on -devel packages ?
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi,
This bit of today's rawhide seems seriously b0rked
--> Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: libgnome-devel for package: gnome-utils
--> Processing Dependency: gtk2-devel for package: gnome-utils
--> Processing Dependency: libgnomeui-devel for package: gnome-utils
--> Restarting Dependency Resolution with new changes.
A non -devel package should not pull in a bunch of -devel deps like this
Regards,

gtk2-devel needs XFree86-devel
by Steven I Usdansky
error: Can't install gtk2-devel-2.8.6-3@i386: no package provides
XFree86-devel. Shouldn't xorg-x11-devel provide this?

Draft RPM Guide available online
by Paul Nasrat
I'm very pleased to announce that the Red Hat RPM Guide has been made
available under the Open Publication Licence, Version 1.0.
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/drafts/rpm-guide-en/
This is much more recent than Maximum RPM and gives a good starting
point to work towards living documentation for RPM. Although some
sections - notably Chapter 7 requires a complete rewrite. However I
wanted to get it out in it's current form (basically as published plus
errata).
I'd like to thank Eric Foster-Johnson, all those involved in the
original formation of the Guide (particularly Jeff Johnson) and Tammy
Fox and those at the publishers for helping to make this happen. Also
thanks to the Fedora Docs team in particular Stuart Ellis and Karsten
Wade for their conversion and push efforts
Participation through normal Fedora Documentation process:
http://fedora.redhat.com/projects/docs/
I'll be attempting to form a team to help edit/update content. If you
want to help please follow up to fedora-docs-list.

Needed dependency for all packages that require the D-Bus session bus
by John (J5) Palmieri
All packages that require the use of the D-Bus session must add a
requirement on dbus-x11. This package brings in the dbus-launch utility
that starts the session bus. Without it the session bus does not get
started. It hasn't been a problem for most because comps brings in
desktop-printing which has a requirement on dbus-x11. For those who do
not have this installed (nothing depends on desktop-printing so the
situation can come up) will not get the dbus-x11 package and any
application using the session bus will not be able to function at their
full capacity. Thank you.

no provider for XFree86-devel dependency
by Patrick Mansfield
Hi -
yum update to current FC is failing for me. It looks like xorg-x11-devel
no longer provides XFree86-devel, as was done in at least FC4.
I could not find any recent bug reports for this, should I open one? I'm
not sure what category, if its xorg-x11-devel or the (multiple) rpms
requiring it.
Is there a workaround? I have lots of *-devel installed in order to
build anaconda.
Tail end of "yum update" output:
--> Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: XFree86-devel >= 4.2.99 for package: pango-devel
--> Processing Dependency: libhowl.so.0 for package: gnome-games
--> Processing Dependency: XFree86-devel for package: gtk2-devel
--> Finished Dependency Resolution

Error: Missing Dependency: XFree86-devel is needed by package gtk2-devel
Error: Missing Dependency: libhowl.so.0 is needed by package gnome-games
Thanks ...

(Not) Customizing Gnome
by Paul A Houle
Last week I made an attempt to customize the Gnome desktop on
Fedora/RHEL and was quite shocked to find how hard it is to do. I've
been developing a system that lets me log into 20+ server/user
configurations, with colorized uxterms (tweaks to the color set so
color ls is readable on various backgrounds), expect to pass
parameters, all kinds of fun stuff. When it came time to set up a GUI
menu, I hit a brick wall.
To be fair, I'm quite impressed with the performance of Gnome on
older hardware. I have a ~ 400 MhZ Pentium machine with about ~ 400 MB
of RAM, and recent RHEL/Fedora versions boot quickly -- Gnome is
responsive, and I've got no complaints about performance.
The documentation sucks. Instructions for editing the menu
graphically "just didn't work." I spent about four hours searching the
web before I realized that I'd need to get a PhD in Gnome to be able to
create arbitrary hiearchies in the 'Hat' menu on the panel. I had to
find a mailing list posting to find out that Nautilus is the application
that displays the right-click menu, not the WM.
The system of vfolders and .desktop files is quite elegant -- it's a
good set of data structures, and in a lot of ways it's preferable to
the way the Start button works on Windows or the non-system of MacOS X.
To take full advantage of that system, however, it would nice to have
a way to attach categories to applications independent of the .desktop
file, perhaps by attaching an emblem to a file. If one could mark
applications as being the "Kiosk" category (system wide), or in the
"Favorite" category (for a particular user), that would be a big help.
What I find particularly exciting about the implementation is that it
ought to be possible to use the same data structures to create a
entirely different UI than a 'start button' clone.
Gnome is also avoiding the reality that any given user only uses a
tiny fraction of the applications on a machine. The Start Menu on
Windows can get to be a godawful mess, but at least you can drop icons
onto the start button so you can always find your top five
applications. People really like the ability to look up the last ten
apps they ran on Mac OS X, and this largely makes up for the miserable
state of the Applications directory.
It would really help to have an easy way to configure the
right-click menu, nautilus-scripts are pretty cool, but not really
what I want. For instance, on RHEL 4 I'd like to get rid of "Create
Terminal" and replace it with an entry point to my system so my muscle
memory doesn't betray me.
Perhaps I'm bitching too much, but I still remember the days when
customizing X Windows on UNIX was as simple as editing a configuration
file. Now it's a matter of reading the documentation for hours, then
finding out that maybe you need to edit an XML file, maybe you need to
use gconf, or maybe you just can't do it and should write your own
panel applet instead.
(That said, RH has done a lot of good in /etc/sysconfig -- I'm
always finding new things to love about it.)

Updates testing dates seems incorrect
by Hans Kristian Rosbach
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/updates/testing/4/i386/
Ex:
File:kernel-2.6.14-1.1633_FC4.i586.rpm 14953 KB 10/31/2004 04:38:00 PM
File:kernel-2.6.14-1.1633_FC4.i686.rpm 14498 KB 10/31/2004 04:39:00 PM
Somehow I doubt that kernel was available a year ago :)
By no means a big issue, but it confused me for a few minutes there
since I actually thought some of the updates had been in testing
for over a year. Until I came to think of the fact that FC4 probably
didn't need updates back then.
I haven't checked other folders, but it seems to me somebody who is
uploading new rpms should check their date settings.
OT: Anyone know why those PHP 5.0.5 packages haven't gone on in yet?
